I have an old crash helmet that is 15+ years old and recently fallen from a shelf 8ft high on to concrete. It hasn't been used for ages due to its age and now need disposing off. I've cut the straps off. The other half is not to keen to turn it into a hanging basket. I don't won't to put into landfill. Any thoughts?

spray it up as a lego head and save it for fancy dress or give it a kid who will then grow up wanting a motorbike http://demilked.uuuploads.com/creative-product-ideas-sebastian-errazuriz/sebastian-errazuriz-zipper-lego-helmet.jpg

give it a kid who will then grow up wanting a motorbike

Exactly what I did last week, the lad spent the next 2 days running about pretending to ride his motorbike :D

Local Ambulance Stations used to take them.

They use them for practicing helmet removal at RTC's.

Nick,
I took mine to the local fire station for them to use for motorcycle RTA training, they were well chuffed.
But am sure any of the emerency services would be happy to if you offered them.

Generally cut mine in half and dispose at the recycling centre. I change my lid every five years or if I drop it. So if it's not (IMO) safe why let other use it.

As for donating it to emergency services, just be careful, if its better than a lid one of the staff are using it may get swapped for their old one.

The other half is not to keen to turn it into a hanging basket.

I like this idea very much.

You can all send your old helmets to me so I can steal this idea. :running:

I recently took a lump hammer to the wife's defunct XR1000, and was well impressed with how much grief it took before expiring! Never thought of the Fire Service option, i'll do that next time though..

I keep all mine for nostalgia - although when I put on my 20+ year old Shoei I got left with a head full of little bits of deteriorated foam - seems such a waste to bin what looks like a perfectly good helmet even if it's after the 5 years and I no longer wear it.

Maybe I could make an art feature out of all of my old ones ?

This thread made me dig out my old Bell karting lid.

And now I have no idea what to do with it. Probably put it back in the loft so I can have another 5 minutes of nostalgia in another 15 years:scratch:
