air box lid

Am looking for an air box lid for my 1994 m900. Currently has no lid whatsoever!

My bike has a little of the top left, but much is cut away to gain air flow (I presume- as the previous owner did it).

My bike doesn't seem to have any problems without it, though it does ensure the filter stays in place! I use mine as a place for the black box which powers my LED front light.

i also like the induction roar - it certainly makes overtaking satisfying!
The K & N filter is held in place by a 'lattice' of wire across the air box.

I have been advised by my mechanic (who knows ducatis inside out) that the bike is running too lean and that i am not gaining a lot as my Arrows cans/system is not free flowing (enough to need an open aor box). I will probably get better useable performance from the dyno jet 2 with a partially open box.
As such - i am looking for a lid

Hmmm seems a little odd that someone would fit open pipes and remove the airbox lid without going the whole hog with a Dynojet (or similar) kit to exploit them.

The original shape Monsters' air box is quite restrictive with it's lid on as it is not really large enough.

Back in the day Ducati did offer a jet kit with a K & N filter, and a securing piece (basically a cut open airbox lid) to allow the motor to breathe better when using race cans but to open it up completely is not really the answer but more making the best of what can be done with the available space- you only have to look how large and complicated airbox design has got over the years to provide the required volume at the correct pressure etc.

So it might be worth a little delve inside the carbs to see what jets are lurking in them and also to ask your man why and where he thinks it is running lean as the jet kits don't usually alter the pilot circuit which is where (coupled with pilot/main jet crossover) most road bikes run a lot of the time.

Remember it is throttle openings not engine revs that determine what fuel circuit the carbs are working.

A Dyno jet kit and open or partially open air box would be the best option. I ran both of my old 2v Ducatis 750 and 900 with open airbox and dynojet kit and although you don't gain a lot of HP overall, because as your guy says the headers are too restrictive (IIRC 40mm when ideally you want 45/50mm headers for the real performance gains). It does give improved throttle response and noise.

Now I have an issue. It appears I have a 1990 top and a 1999 bottom to which it doesn't fit easily without major bending or dismantling of airbox. Tonight I fitted throttle cables and carbs and now stuck as cannot get on further
