No knob references today guys? it's all that got me through the day at work yesterday.

I'm off to Seawork for the rest of the day, but I Bl00dy well expect some good quality Knob Double Entendre by the time I get home.

Nasher.

Well the postie teased me and came much later than normal this morning.
When he finally thrust the knob through my flaps, I rushed and eagerly grasped it with both hands.
I dashed into the man cave with it and toyed and fiddled with it until I was in ecstasy.
I offered it into the hole but decided not to screw it properly until it was all measured up correctly...

Quite frankly that is ENOUGH!!... Happy Nasher?

Thank you again Dukedesmo for helping me out.
I now have a choice of three CAD men, so I will set about getting it drawn up asap.
There also seem to be plenty of 3D printing places locally, so watch this space.

I also have a design for a custom end piece which involves three colours and has something of the essence of a Kinder Surprise. You'll just have to wait and see...

I now have a 3D CAD model of the knob, and I am sending feelers out to local 3D printers.

I just wondered if there is anyone in the club who has access to a 3D printer who would be willing to get involved?

On the one hand it might turn out to be easier for me to deal with a local company personally, but on the other it would be kinda nice to keep it in the club, provided it doesn't turn out to be a big hassle for someone.

Rick the t-shirt used to have one.
He probably still does.
I think it was a fairly basic one, which he built himself from plans.
Dunno how good it is or whether he could do it, but I could ask .... ?
He'd possibly be chuffed to have a project for it that would have a real-world usefulness.

I've emailed the files to both of you.
If Rick can do them, he might become the preferred supplier.

I have made a good contact locally who can prototype the thing and we can try it out to prove it. Then as many as needed can be made by whoever wherever.

Woo hoo.! Thanks for that Rob.
I couldn't download the reader, so that's the first time I've been able to rotate the model... Fun innit...

Just to update on this.
While I was in talks with a local fellow to get a winder printed, Rob dived in and had a couple printed via 3D hubs. They look like this...

They were printed in ABS @ 200 micron resolution. Rob sent them to me to try on my speedo.
Sadly they did not fit the shaft, and turned out to be about 0.5mm undersize all round.
I carefully drilled out one of them with a new 4mm bit, and that fitted the trip shaft perfectly (except for not having a flat anymore.)
So the model was right at 4mm but 200 micron resolution was not good enough.
I sent out email enquiries to a few 3D printers and was either getting no replies or quotes for single prints in the region of £60.

Just when I had given up, my local fellow dropped me a mail to ask how I was getting on with the trip winder, and btw he has a new SLA machine he wants to try out.
No sooner had I explained the problems I was having than he says he has printed one already and if it doesn't fit he won't charge me...
His rates are £10 for the first one and £5 for subsequent ones.
So I dashed over and tried the winder on my shaft.. It fit perfik!..Needless to say I bunged him a tenner.
This is printed in resin using SLA @25 micron resolution and the result is like an injection moulding... A very nice product. unfortunately he only has grey resin at the moment, but it can be done in black just the same.

So we now have a CAD model and printing regime that works, and also a good contact who can do them at a good price.

As it stands, I can email you the CAD model and/or my printer chappies details.
Hopefully this will all appear on a future post if I can find out how to post details of the STL file for the model.

STL file

I suspect dimensions are specified in cm rather than mm having done a test upload to 3D Hubs

Thank you for posting that Rob.
I found it easy enough to save the file from your link.
It seems to default to inches, but it's easy to change to mm by selecting the relevant "file units" at the top of the drawing.

If anyone wants to print one, just make sure you specify that it's done with (black) resin SLA @ 25 micron resolution

Or if you contact Sam on sjdoyle96 (at) gmail (dot) com he is up and running with this particular print and already has the STL file. You might even get one for a fiver + postage. ( just ask for a Ducati trip reset knob)

I now have a spare one in grey that is available. It could be painted black if needs be or dyed.

Thanks for your help with this project Rob.. (You probably ran the original one over when I knocked it off, leaving Hayle...!)

I guessed that it was cm, as it came out at 3.3x1.5 x1.5

it ain't 3" long and it's certainly bigger than 4mm,

you'd think whoever came up with the file format would have found a simple way to specify units within the file but hey...

I see what you mean. It does look like the model is meant to be in cm.
I'm afraid I can't explain that. For the avoidance of doubt here is the drawing in mm.
If anyone takes the STL to a printer make sure they get the size right.
