New aluminium petrol tank
Well after months of " shall i/ shan't i"
I decided to commit and order one, as the problem of the swollen tank isn't going to get any better on it's own. It's s lot of cash i know, and money i'd much rather spend elsewhere. I plan on keeping the bike ,so i can kind of justify it to myself. It's going to be a long 4 months wait for it to be made and delivered. If anyone needs to go down the same route, i ordered from Www.samurider.com who are the dealer for www.beater.jp They look a work of art and get great reviews on fit etc, so fingers crossed........ Now what can i get my other half for a tenner for chrismas? Last edited by damien666; 06-12-2014 at 09:17 AM.. |

Looks good, I'll be interested to see what it's like when it arrives!
Would also be tempted by this: http://ca-cycleworks.com/products/tanks/mtt43-s2r Not aluminium, but seems a reasonable price! |

They look lovely I must admit but I do wonder how much it would have cost to have had one custom made here in the U.K. from your existing tank.
I paid £300 for mine to be made- ok the place had templates but there is still a lot of work that goes into making it and that included the Monza fuel cap, two petrol taps and a load of rubber fixing straps so I thought it a bargain really.

nearly £1200 + shipping = mega expensive
vat (import duty) would add on another £240

Not that it makes much difference , but if anyone is thinking about it, the shipping is free at the moment.
It's money i could do without spending, and once painted it won't look any different. Was thinking of going with a black stripe though. I'm lucky i can spray it myself as i'm a car painter by trade, which will save a bit i suppose. I'd much rather be buying some Kineo spoked wheels with the money instead! |

That is superbly expensive, well done. I was thinking of buying a carbon tank one day but they are only about £1k
As is being written elsewhere on the forum, if the bike is a keeper it's worth every penny. I'm particularly fond of the type of mods that are hidden but expensive |

Like Dirty, I'm a bit of a fan of keeping things subtle rather than showing off really expensive mods etc. but if I was doing it I would reverse stencil the Ducati logo to show the polished alloy underneath.

I've coveted an ally tank for my 750 for years.
Its the only really sensible material for a motorcycle fuel tank in my opinion. In fact my winter Dommie will be getting an ex TT500 Yamaha item too....eventually. I did look into getting one made a while back. There's a guy in Scotland who's prices were attractive, but he was hard to pin down and actually get one made. I also have a post-it note on my wall bearing the legend "Parker Fabrications..handbuilt alloy tanks". I believe Henry Cole used them for the tank on his recent salt-flats sprinter. But they'll likely be expensive. BUT...I do know that Max has looked into getting a few made, for marketing via his "Desmoperformance" operation. Watch this space ? I do like the look of a single stripe of colour on a plain ally tank....like the old BSA Victor 441 scramblers. But to be honest, I'd probably leave it plain, with just a stick-on Ducati graphic. That way, you can just polish it with no worry of paint being damaged. It will happen one day (well, the bike's a keeper and the steel tank won't last forever). I dare say Stafford will be along soon to gloat about having got a Roadracing tank for tuppence in Belgium........ |

I agree that somebody/ company with the latest scanning and steel/ aluminium pressing equipment could have a fantastic opportunity if the quality and numbers can be achieved for an affordable price. With a lot of brands using plastic tanks, it's a potentially big market.
I like the carbon chequer stripe on capo's tank. |
