More than 40 private messages?

I'm at the limit of private messages, and I'm having to delete stuff I'd rather keep.

If I ask nicely, can this limit can be increased?

you can create another folder and store the ones you want to keep in that.
the PM's stored their do not affect your PM total

Hmmm, I created a folder, and moved some messages to it, but although they've been moved, it still says I have a total of 40 (now distributed across folders), and a max of 40.

Am I missing something?

You could always create your own personal "Abuse Snips Here" thread, to save cluttering up PM's with unwanted rants?
