Taking ULEZ into account looks like my options are the SV or an MT03

Dacs' wife has recently got a mt03. You could ask her via Dacs what she thinks of it. She seemed quite pleased with it when I saw her on it this morning.

I've an MT03, the 2007 version with the side mounted shock. Single cylinder 660 and fantastic run around. Plenty of grunt from low down revs and a great steering lock for much tighter turns than the monster which is great in and around town. Low seat height for both feet on the ground. Would def recommend.

Sounds exactly like what I'm after. I'll have a look into them, any particular issues with them to be aware of?

No, not really.
Had a small issue with the LCD odo/tacho/clock display where the right hand side was not working properly. I opened it up to discover the ribbon cable loose. Easy fix. I've had a few yamahas, including an XTZ 750 Super Tenerrie. Mechanically bullet proof bikes really in my experience.

Be aware that Yamaha used the MT 03 name twice - from 2006 to 2014 it used the XT660 single cylinder engine, from 2016 onwards it is a 321cc twin (basically the YZF-R3 with the fairing removed). SWMBO has the later twin. They are obviously different in the way that they produce their power, you will have your own view on which engine layout would provide the best runaround.
Subject to ULEZ suitability, Yamaha's TDM might be worth considering.

I've just noticed there's a whole load of new sub 500cc bikes around which makes things more confusing.

I'm also surprised no one said get another Monster....

Hard to get a good condition/ requires no work, cheap Monster thats relatively new to pass ULEZ for that money?

Remember, if your bike is over 40 years old it qualifies for ULEZ exemption as well as Tax & MOT automatically if you have applied for the Historic Vehicle Taxation Class. You should check with DVLA that your vehicle is registered in that class. So you could get yourself an 1979 or older two stroke scream machine which would be fun to ride!

Man maths is telling me to push my budget to around 2.5k. Even still I don't think a Monster would work because I'd just end up babying it all the same!

I'm thinking about the newer MT03 now as the running costs for that must be fairly cheap? And looks good fun. Or stick with the bigger stuff and get an SV or the bigger MT.

As you can see I'm good at confusing myself
