Changing gauge faces

Has any one tried removing the needles on a 2003 set of gauges, as I want to fit new gauge overlays. Can they be eased off with two tea spoons, I have had a go but there seems to be a lot of resistance!

I Suspect they're glued on. Like you, I've tried pulling and levering the needles judiciously, I've always bottled out for fear of causing permanent damage.

I bought a damaged set of gauges to switch the cards onto my bike for the change from Kph to Mph. These are sealed up tight and would need cutting open. The best quote i found for this was £300 with new glass & reassembled/ warranteed.

That job is on hold!

Don’t know what year your 900 is Jez? ‘02 onward clocks come apart easily enough if you’re careful

I took mine apart and sealed them with silicone grease to stop them misting up, I’ve never dissasembled the main board/faces/needles though.

Although looking back at Darry’s old post he got the needles out ok, perhaps his photos will offer you a clue Neil?

I took the needles from the pins on an '05 800 as the tacho after doing it's sweep read about 1500 revs without the engine running and the speedo read a few mph too and, if I can remember correctly, they pulled off quite easily. I put masking tape around the central part of the needle, the piece that attaches to the spindle, I then used a small pair of pliers on the masked part and eased it off.

If it is glued on normally a hairdryer, on warm, played onto the part will soften the glue allowing you to separate the parts, or there are 'debonders' available, such as Pro-Bond, for a couple of pounds, which dissolve the glue allowing you to separate the parts. If I am making a model kit and using etched brass on plastic which, normally, I will fit with superglue, if I have made an arse of it, not unusual , I will use a debonder to split the parts.

I think as already stated in previous posts they should pull off quite readily without too much force.
Good luck

Job Done

Many thanks guys they popped off a treat warmed them with a hairdryer using my finger nail flicked up the back edge (opp. Needle) of top black cap .
Then where I was going wrong, I was trying to lift the bottom black cap sitting on the gauge faces. But instead using two teaspoons you lever either side of the clear part of the needle just above the black cap. They eased up a treat and came off. CAREFULLY.

Thanks Slob!

Like you I am nervous of damaging the clocks by removing the needles...

I should add that the £300 did include new lenses in glass, as well as fitting cards reseal etc.

I am back to thinking it over again at least!
