Electric bikes. What's your views?

So what are your views on electric bikes? I know they don't have massive range. But I've been toying with the idea of a electric enduro bike for bit of winter fun, I tried a zero fx yesterday and I was really taken by it. Anybody tried them also?

No, but they are inevitable. New Cagivas are going to be electric.

My bike is a fun toy. Part of it is the noise.

I'm not against having an electric bike but I doubt I will as it will be new & expensive, and hard to justify since I don't really "need" the one I've got! Plus I really like my Monster, so I can't see me selling it anytime soon.

Now if the government start with crazy new pollution/ emission laws on older bikes, and petrol goes up even more, I might rethink this.

Agreed, I don’t really feel the need to spend £10k plus on a new toy at the moment, though the video does make these Zero bikes look quite fun.

I think I’ll try keep my options open till we know a bit more about “events”.

For anyone looking for an electric ducati look no further than the Perego brand,
they manufacture a two wheeled monster and hypermotard as well as a three wheeled desmo....

As for full size Ducati's I always thought that it was the sound that most of us go for.....

I have ridden a couple of electric bikes ,, they are fun and performance can be amazing ,,,, BUT 3 main issues that put me off are ,, handling due to imbalance of battery pack and motor ,,,,,PRICE and range ,need 200 mile range and 30 min fast charging to be sensible and sub 10k pricing .

2 - 10 hr charging time ... range 40 - 100 miles

I think they need to improve a bit before they are a viable option other than for fun use to go pick up a tin of beans or two from your local Tesco.

That's the thing, I wanna keep my monster as I love it too much. But for a bit of winter fun I think the electric dirt bike would be good. It does only have sub 100mile range but will have quick.charge for sub 7k so it is rather tempting.

For me they have the same major disadvantages as electric cars, Price and Range, one is way too high the other is way too low.

For me the feel and sound of a petrol engine is a big part of bikes. I've only got old bikes at the moment, don't know if I'll get anything newer but if I do it'll have a petrol engine.

But I reckon I can keep my current bikes running long enough for me and I'll likely have given up riding by the time choice is finally removed from us.

So I'll not be getting an electric bike - unless it's a mobility scooter...

I'm all for the idea but the price is too much right now, especially in this country where budgets are more and more squeezed every year. Once the battery tech catches up to the point that we can pull into a charging station and either recharge quickly or swap batteries for fully charged ones they should go more mainstream. Don't think they will replace my petrol bikes but they will run alongside. Good idea here

What is the cost of replacing the batteries when they deteriorate or pack up after a few years or x number of charging cycles?

I’ve often thought an electric trials bike would be good. You can be discreet in sensitive areas.

Yes, I’m with you there. The loud exhaust is part of the road racing speed thing, whereas on a trials bike it’s about low speed control, so as long as you’ve enough sensory feedback on what the motor is doing you don’t need an exhaust.
