Just get an oil filter socket, they're not expensive and very handy and you don't need a nut on the end to tighten or remove it. It uses the flats on the end of the filter and you can use it to tighten by hand and with a socket wrench to remove it if needed. Less messy than stabbing through it with a screwdriver too.

I have to say in all the years I've been riding I've never had an oil filter come loose and the only ones to ever leak on any bike (or car for that matter) were in that bad batch of genuine Ducati ones from a couple of years ago.

Only trouble with that is that some (many) aftermarket filters have a different number of flats on the hex than the std Ducati ones have.
I laboriously hacked a homemade wrench out of 5/16 inch steel plate.
Imagine my annoyance when it didn't fit the aftermarket filter that I bought.
Easily solved by sticking to std or similar filters though.

I quite like the notion of using a jubilee clip to hammer on.
Filed for future reference.

That's annoying. You could always use a strap wrench as backup in that case maybe?

I'm on my third leaky standard Ducati filter. Always worse in cold weather until warm up but constantly dripping now (even leakier than my M21 and that says something). Seems it is rubber seal defect / deformation as they are always tightened correctly.

I've been using HiFlo filters lately.
Partly because they fit my wrench and partly because that's what was sold by the company that I last got my Shell Advance from.
I suppose they must have the same hex as std .. can't remember for sure but I could check.
Had no leaks with those, anyway.
Well not that I've noticed, though the bellypan shrouds things a tad.

i have always doubled checked filter tightness

I use HiFlo filters on all my bikes and have never had a problem with them.

I've used Ducati, Hiflo and more recently K&N and never had a leak or one come loose.

I use K&N purely because the hex makes them easier to fit/remove, said hex also has a lockwire hole in it if required.

I've read various debates/arguments online regarding the the filtration qualities but I highly doubt there's much difference between any of them.

irony is today the Brand new oil pressure switch started to leak clean oil out of the electrical connector ,, DOH!!!! they are so crappy
