oil filter fell off !!!!

Coming home last night about 1 mile from home oil light came on,,stopped bike oil all over rear tyre >>> got the bike home ,, this morning look it over NO OIL FILTER

Got a new filter and 3L of oil on and started it up OK sounds fine

not sure what to do???


Oil was changed by me a month ago it was a K&N filter and I tightened it up as per usual on all my bikes so how did it fall off after 870 miles ???

I've been riding bikes for over 40 years and have never heard of an oil filter falling off. Have you pissed someone off recently?

There was a lot of noise a couple of years ago about fake K&N filters (IIRC). Can't remember the details, but it has to do with bad threads or similar. I'm surprised that it had time to unscrew all the way before the light came on.

Weird

I had a slight leak once from the standard filter on my Evo and switched to K&N. I've had three since then with no problems.

So was the oil pressure switch in your earlier post http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/s...235#post562235

actually faulty too or was the oil leak just down to the loose filter?

The genuine K&N filters should have holes in the hex head for lockwiring so maybe worth taking advantage of that feature for future peace of mind.

The K&N that fell off seemed OK although the hex nut supposed tobe 17mm or 14mm was not able to be used with metric spanners ??? had to use imperial ?? i torqued it to 20ft lbs

This time I have a Hiflo 153

All my K&Ns were 17mm so perhaps it was a copy like stopintime suggested.

Also, the maximum torque recommended for the Evo (probably the same for the S4) is only 12 Nm, which is just under 9 lbft so 20 lbft seems a bit excessive?

The oil pressure switch was leaking again but I have fixed that too with a longer brass 10mm spigot and epoxy .

the filter must have come loose very fast .

toyota ,triumph and honda reccomend 20nm for filters

I can't comment on the Toyota/Honda figures but my old Daytona was only 10 Nm (7.4 lbft) and I think the 675 and Thruxton motors are the same. 20 Nm still seems a lot to me.

I must say, with your fuelling issues as well, it does seem that the biking gods have taken against you recently! Have you run over a black cat or something??

Luddite the fueling maps are now ok it was fitting the db killers that made a good engine bad but now fixed

the oil filter was a fake no doubt about it i have seen similar ones for sale but this time i have fitted a milano filter much better quality made in italy

bike is running well again

i opened the strainer and no particles of ally or steel so i reckon all is ok ,

taking her out for a gentle run
