Tank catch 1995 M900

Been away from here for a bit putting some miles on the M900, mostly trouble free, except for a hiccup caused, luckily, by no more than a dodgy plug. I look like the incredible hulk riding a monkey bike, but its surprisingly comfortable and what a blast!!
Anyway to the point.
My tank catch broke but I have been able to repair it successfully and quite neatly with some threaded M4 bar embedded in JB weld.
However I cant for the life of me see how the spring is meant to engage and exactly what its function is. Mine is slack but the catch seems to work fine.
It would be great if someone could take a photo that shows how the spring ends are supposed to engage to put it in torsion.

Sorry about the photo quality, and this is on a year 2004 Monster, but the spring on mine has the join between the two coils out of sight and the two extensions pointing towards the hinged end of the latch handle, so compared to your photo its the other way up and the other way round in relation to the latch handle

Thanks, Dacs. I think I can see whats happened....I should have wound the spring up around the broken part BEFORE I glued it together

I can fix it but I'll have to remove the pivot pin and re swage it.
I may just leave it because it works quite satisfactorily

You should be able to pick up a plastic replacement fairly cheaply (£20 or so) Problem with the plastic ones is they break, as you have found. The metal ones seem to go for much more ££'s but don't break. I think the sping only serves to keep the hand tab flush with the body of the clip so it doesn't droop and scratch your tank. I don't think they affect the operation of the catch per se?

If it was 20 quid I would have done. I obvoiusly didnt look hard enough, the plastic one I saw was £48. Will look again, thanks

That's the same clip that I had on my S2R, which had a plastic tank, so it might be slightly different from yours.

I think Lucaz (Saint aka ML) retro-fitted a metal latch to a plastic latch tank with minimal modification. You could PM him for more details.

Thanks. In the intervening period Ive been furiously googling and comparing the different catches on Stein Dinse for all the different year models and I think it will fit. Strictly mine should be 706040021A rather than 706040061B, but Im not fussed as long as it can be fitted.

You're better off with a metal one if it fits. The plastic unbroken ones are rare but £48 is a rip off in any case. I think sometimes sellers just exaggerate the price twofold and hope to get lucky?

If it does require modification, do PM Lucaz - I'm certain he's done the swap and sure he'd be happy to share his knowledge with you. (I'm usually pretty good at finding old threads on this forum, but I've drawn a blank on this one I'm afraid.)
