Is it really as ridiculous as it looks to change an air filter on a monster 1100s ?? what an earth were they thinking ? is there an easy way of doing this ? thanks vince ..

'fraid not, Vince. You're going to have to remove the tank covers to get to the air filter underneath, there's no alternative. If it's any consolation, after you've done it a few times, it does get easier. I can get the covers off now in under five minutes (although it always seems to take twice as long to replace them as the small screws at the front of the tank never seem to line up with the spring clips).

It makes me very nostalgic for the easy access on my old Monsters - one clip at the front, lift the tank (fuel level permitting of course!) and battery, ECU and air filter are all laid out before you.

One thing I would advise is to definitely use threadlock on the two small screws on either side by your knees - otherwise they will vibrate loose and disappear.

Agree with Luddite, it is a fiddly job, I tend to use a bit of copperslip on all the screw threads, acts as a thread locker and stops you rounding out the heads when you next take them off.

It’s easy once you’ve done it a few times. Whilst your in there you could fit the MWR Race filter kit.

Thanks guy's ,, so is it just covers or has the tank it's self got to be undone and moved ??

I'm sure it'll be ok it just seems a bit silly to get to !! why design it like that ! like you say Lud my old 900 was easy to get to just lift the tank and it had a stay to prop it up as well !! lol

Just the covers need to come off, Vince - the tank itself stays in place. (Watch you don't lose any of the top hat spacers from the filler cap surround.)

My apologies, Vince, my memory must be playing tricks with me. Although I seem to have the tank covers off almost every other week, it's been quite a few years since I actually changed the air filter. I'd forgotten that I'd also fitted the Termi exhaust at the same time so I'd have had to lift the tank to swap the ECU.

Still, lifting the tank itself is the simple bit (assuming there's not too much fuel in it) it's the covers that are time consuming. I wouldn't recommend removing the tank completely as that means disconnecting the QD fuel pipes and it's easy to damage their o-rings.

I don't know whether you've lifted the tank yet but one thing you should look out for when replacing it is that the two fuel pipes that run along the right underside edge of the tank are located properly. There are two channels moulded into the tank base that guide the pipes, which usually pop out when you move the tank so just make sure that they are fully home.
