Is that Sircs cracked frame one? Bargain M900 and I'm sure that could be sorted fairly easily by someone with your skills?

How on earth did you manage to crack the frame there? Early ones are known to be weak at the headstock and crankcases on the 851/888 racers too did tend to crack hence the stronger/thicker tubes on the later bikes and bracing around the crankcases pivot on the 916 etc.

Best I p.m. probably, i've seen many cracked at the cruciform on that frame config, I told Tony, i've upset a few owners at the local cafe when they weren't even aware. If the two long engine bolts have become loose then this is the common cause but not in my case (NPI).

yes, Chris told me the frame was cracked, I bought it on that basis.... As chris says, its more common than you think... the last ST4s I built had cracks and I decided to weld that, and add strengthening tubes...

I want to keep this standard, and just by luck I know of a 900 frame going spare, so I may swop to that one... we will see!

here are the cracks on the st4S frame

On the last couple of builds where I have converted from EFI to carbs I have used an Ignitech ignition unit that utilised the original induction sensor. While the bikes ran OK, I had to make adjustments in the software to compensate for the fact that the values in the software differed from what was actually happening on the bike, plus the tick over was not as steady as I would have liked… This irritated me, and Ignitech themselves refused to answer emails for advice… so I investigated a hall effect setup.

I read about it on the fastbikegear website (Liam has been VERY helpful) and decided to give it a go… The sensors are tiny, and sense two small magnets in the cam wheel through a couple of 3mm holes in the alloy plate. South Pole switches it on, north off, so it’s important to get them the right way round, hence the magnet and phone! Here is how I made it, took a while! The values in the software now match the actual advance when checked with a strobe, and the tick over is rock solid! I have shown it here on the 996 engine as that bike is on the road…

I think the frame and wheels would be the same colour they are now.

BTW they did do a few S2R and S4R in a metallic orange with black stripe. Very rare though and wouldn't be period for '97 as much later

Yes, they’d changed from bronze frame and black wheels to champagne for both by ‘97.

IIRC it's still a hard colour to match up so if you can save the original finish then I would. I guess if you're using that cracked frame then it will need paint and would look better if it matched the wheels.

There may be some paint codes for '97 in the Monster Bible so I would check there first.

There’s quite a lot of info here:

http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/s...e+paint+colour

Looking at some photo’s, it looks like there are at least three shades of frame from ‘93 to ‘98, and the champagne wheels were fitted with bronze frames for at least some ‘96 bikes.
