Driving License Photo’ Card

What is the expiry date of your UK Driving License Photo’ Cards?

I don’t want you to tell me, but check whether they are still valid and when you have to renew them. Mine is my second, but shall expire in October, having got one fairly early when they were introduced.

There are probably a few others at or near expiry!

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/m...iving-licences

‘Motorists must renew their photocard licence when it expires. If they fail to renew their licence they will be breaking the law and risk a fine of up to £1,000.’

Thanks for the heads up Darkness.
Looks like mine will last for 7 years and 3 months, which seems an odd time?

Looking at all the groups I can ride/drive, it looks like they all expire the day before my 70th birthday.. What happens then?

I can't believe you're in your sixties, Mr G - you look so young in your avatar!

When you (eventually) reach 70, you'll have to renew your licence every three years (I used to do it for my dad).

The 7 years and 3 months is the time between issue and expiry of my current issue, so not really a clue to my age..

My avatar is a lovely but tragic fellow named Snowflake, he was an albino Gorilla.

Google his story but have some hankies ready!

Mind take a pic of your current one…front and back before you send it off. There’s a lot of forums where people say they have lost or gained entitlements in error.

The DVLA of course will then be adamant you never had said entitlement in the first place leaving you to fight it out or re-sit

I'd also heard horror stories about losing the motorcycle entitlement when renewing a licence. As I still have an ancient paper licence, (which is beginning to resemble the Dead Sea Scrolls!), I was worried that, when it eventually needs replacing, I'd lose my entitlement.

So I emailed DVLA with my concerns and received this reply:

"Thank you for your enquiry received on 2/4/2019.
Your case reference number is 01382086.

We appreciate that you have taken the time to contact us in relation to this matter.

On checking your record I can confirm we hold that you passed your Category A (Motorcycle) test on 20/08/1980.*

Therefore if you exchanged your paper licence for a photocard licence this entitlement remain on your record.

We do not retain the old paper licence as we hold digital records. You may wish to keep a copy of your current licence yourself.
I can confirm that old style paper driving licences are still valid and there is no requirement for this to be exchanged for a photocard style licence.
"

So, if you've got to send your licence back for any reason, I'd suggest you first contact DVLA for confirmation that your details are correct. Save their reply and then you've got something tangible if there's anything wrong with your new licence. https://live.email-dvla.service.gov....rs%20Enquiries

for the IT geeks

the problem at the DVLA probably looks something like...

UPDATE entitlement_category SET category_a = 'NULL' WHERE name LIKE '%Luddite%';

Still got my original paper one before photo ID came in. Had no reason to change it, no address change and no points.
Valid until 2024 and that is a clue to my age!
