DP Electronic Tacho
Dug this out of storage the other day and made up the wiring loom with the male and female 3 way connectors to see if it works.
The electronics part came to me as part of a bigger package of parts last year, but with a smashed Carbon bracket and completely untested. I've been looking out for a decent bracket ever since and managed to find this one. The Electronics part it came with is fubar as it constantly indicates 5K RPM. Putting the two good bits together has given me a working unit, but I'm really not sure about it. I think I'm going to carry on with my full size analogue face Tacho project instead. What's peoples experience with them? I know Flip likes his and I don't think has had any trouble with it. Nasher.

Oh
This one appears to be OK, just connecting it up and giving it a bit of throttle on the stand it goes from 1K to 3 or 4K RPM like I'd expect, and goes from 1K to 1.5 and 2K on the Choke lever. The other set of electrics I have really is bad, just constantly showing 5K RPM and should go in the bin. I could always stick a spare speedo and Idiot light set in it and hang it on the wall. Perhaps some Hipster would buy it for his 'Studio'. Nasher.

I had one of those and I wasn't impressed.
For one thing I could never get a stable reading from it. But my main complaint was the poor quality of the mechanical design .. the tacho unit is way too heavy for the poorly designed carbon bracket and the whole thing bounces around, being supported by the speedo cable as much as anything. And therein lay the main problem .. as the unit tried to bounce against the restraint from the speedo cable, it eventually caused the speedo mounting bolts to break. That's not quite as dramatic as it sounds since the speedo mounting bolts are actually a two-part affair with a central rubber section bonded in the middle .. and the bonding became detached. Fortunately, since I have a lathe and a bit of ingenuity, I was able to effect a repair to my speedo but for most folk that would have been time to buy a new one. I sold the revcounter unit to a forum member soon afterwards (very cheaply and explaining my reasons) and I was glad to see the back of it. I've heard no bad feedback from him since but I strongly suspect his speedo mounts are now broken. On the other hand, I know that Flip also has had one fitted for some time, and seems to be happy with it. But put it this way .. if I woke up one morning to find that the goodies fairy had fitted one while I was asleep, I would remove it before riding the bike. |

These can be a reasonable alternative.

Yes, sorry 'bout that. Maybe my personal comments came across as a bit harsh. I was only speaking from my own experience, although admittedly that was of a secondhand unit off ebay. Who knows, maybe I mounted it badly or was missing some crucial little parts .. though it seemed ok at the time. Anyway, Flip likes his, and I would generally trust his judgement on stuff. And the new owner of mine seems happy with it. |

I quite liked mine as a quirky-retro-oddball looking piece of kit. But with the few times I've used mine "precision" definitely doesn't spring to mind. lol

Sorry been a bit off forum lately- had the Outlaws staying with us.
Anyway, yes I quite like mine really in the same oddball (now) retro kind of way but it was fitted from new on my bike as the dealer got sent it by mistake and managed to hang onto it so it got included in the deal when my mate bought the bike from them. Personally, I've never had a problem with it working as such and it's certainly never failed but as the LED's go up in 500rpm increments it does dance about quite a bit so it's never going to be an accurate measure for engine speed. It's been on so long now I probably wouldn't bother changing it but if I was to start all over again with my bike I would most likely go for the minimalist look and only have the essentials- Speedo, oil pressure, charge and fuel lights and do away with all the others. Who knows- these things are always work in progress and if it's reversible then I still might for a while.
