Monster TT Special

I picked up my new Alloy Tank today from Tab 2 Classics in Wales, this is the first significant phase in turning my 2007 695 into a 1980s TT1 look a like for the 2018 Track Parade season.
Next in line Seat, Fairing & Pipes
Will post a photo when I can work out how to do it !!!

A very interesting project.
I'm looking forward to seeing the build as it progresses.
And maybe catch a glimpse in the metal when its finished.
Are you likely to be at the classic race meeting at Donington ?

Thanks for the nice comments, to me the Tank is the focal point and the key to making any bike look different.
I will be at the Donnington Classic if I can convince the CRMC that my 2007 bike looks Classic enough to qualify for the Parades.
As a rule of thumb, for Classic Racing, Original or Replica, for Parades "look a like" is generally sufficient

That’s looking great!

Tab 2 made the tank for my little racer after the composite one began to leak despite it being lined with an ethanol proof coating. They knocked up a shiny bright alloy one and got it to me in just over a week in time for me to make the races I was entered in at the time.

As for the CRMC allowing it into their parade I wouldn’t hold your breath unless you’ve paraded with them before and have a ‘way in’.

They run their parade entries pretty much the same as the race entries that being you need to be a member of the CRMC and enter on an eligible bike within their dating periods- there have been a few exceptions especially at the Donnington meeting but always race bikes or almost exact replicas of such as MV’s and a couple of Hondas.

Donnington is always over subscribed with plenty of ex and current professional racers riding but if it was Pantah based I think you’d be okay but still worth an ask.

A Cagiva Allazzurra would almost certainly be a more sensible bike to convert than a M695. But whoever said sensible was best? The 695 may be a much better bike but ineligible because it has efi, I don't know. Pantahs are now fetching silly money anyway.

The main reason for choosing the M695 as a basis was price £2500, 12k, Service History and New Belts, no brainer.
Also its the last with a "traditional" Swing Arm, so a "look a like" is even more possible, total build to look like a TT will come out under £7k
2018 will mark 50 years since my very first race in 1968, and as I have a bit of "form" on my Thruxton Bonneville and other bikes most entry's wont be a problem, Bike + Rider = 80 + !!! .
First event will be Thunderfest at Darley Moor in May, followed by many more inc. Classic TT.

Ah ha! I thought that was a Thruxton Bonnie on your avatar.

Smashing job on the tank. Lovely to see a skill still used and people who can still work with their hands.
Also good to know that people are still prepared to pay the rate for good bespoke work and keep the skills alive.

I loved the photo thread of the construction, but I'm a little confused that they mentioned brazing on the fittings. Can aluminium be brazed?

P.S. I'd be up for a tootle over to Donnington..

if the filler has a significantly lower melting point than the parent metal it’s brazing rather than welding, so yes. if you look on ebay or at your local hardware superstore you’ll find ‘lumiweld’ or similar rods.

Ah, gotcha. I though brazing implied Brass in the equation. I've been using Lumiweld for years and not realised I was brazing with it.

So is sif-bronze welding, brazing or welding?
