New DID chain fitted

Have just fitted a new chain on the 1100evo after 17700 miles. Old original Regina chain was worn so far that it could be pulled away from the rear sprocket by about 5 mm. Sprockets however were not so bad so I judged that the dramatic wear in the chain was relatively recent. Obviously the most important consideration was bling, so a D.I.D 525 zvm-x Gold on Gold was required. I have learnt a lot of lessons on cutting and fitting and have also dismantled the old chain in order to learn where wear takes place and what is important regarding lubrication and cleaning in future.

To be honest, would always change chain and sprockets together, you may find you will have excelerated the wear on the new chain.

I always change both sprockets when I change the chain too but perhaps its not always needed.

Gold is the way forward! Bling bling!

Thanks for the advice chaps, I agree that in a perfect world replacing sprockets and chain together would be best. But in my case the chain wear was at around 1 percent, or under 3/8ths over a 36 inch piece of chain. Maximum wear before a chain is total scrap was traditionaly 2 percent or say 6mm in 300, or 1/4 inch per foot. Nearly all the wear had taken place on the solid pins. Not all of them but most, which had given rise to tight spots, or should that be loose spots? The rollers were all still cylindrical and showed no external wear and were well lubricated but the chain really had had it because of the grease loss from the sealed pins and wear would be very rapid from now on.
The sprockets appeared to be in very good condition, certainly no visible change in profile between the driven side and the trailing side of the teeth. So, I will take a chance on them for the next two or three years. A final thought is that maybe not all pattern replacement sprockets are of oem quality anyway so I would have had to spend even more cash to buy the very best and how about a new carrier and cush drive rubbers and so on until all my cash is gone. Time will tell!
