Interesting also that they made aircraft instruments, as it would go some way to explaining their preference for an aviation lubricant... Thanks for the info.
Smiths Plc has changed a lot, instrumentation was sold off years ago, currently probably best known for airport detection systems and medical devices amongst other things. Current corporate turnover is about £3.5 billion and listed on the FTSE 100 and employing about 22,000 globally

Blimey, is that really Taglioni ?
Funny, but I was going to say ... that photo shows the very reason that I ride a 750 monster.
Meaning the bike, which stirred something very deep in my motorcycling soul at the time and which remains stirred to this day.
But actually, it seems the photo shows BOTH reasons.
And is it my eyes or does Taglioni bear a cheeky grin, like he just knows that he has created something truly special, after which the world will never be quite the same ....?

My dad was also an RAF mechanic and swore by black molybdenum grease.
I inherited a large tin of the stuff, though sadly it got lost in a house move somewhere along the way.

Next after the Sloooww Monster rebuild is a 1974 3 1/2 Morini bought in 1990 for £50 restored by my dad in 1991/2 but left in a damp shed for 13 years and a bit crusty now. Pictures "before" to follow
