evo headlight change. easy or no-go?
I love the look of my evo, but would prefer to swap the headlight for a more traditional one with the fairing from an earlier model.
has anyone tried this? I have seen pictures but not details how difficult will this be to do? are the connectors, bulbs, electrics compatible? what about the clocks? thanks Rob |

Clocks are a pain in the rear I think.
I have a 796 and want to swap the clocks, however, the immobiliser is connected to the clock. You can take the bike to Dave Woods and he claims that he can remove the immo. Not sure about the rest of what you want to know.

I think Jan of Belgium did this mod a year or two ago, looked so much better.

He also put in a HID light as well.
A bit better than the 2 candle power lights on the bikes now

Lucky you don't go fast enough to blow them out then.

I'm interested in this mod too but without reducing any advantage the current lamp has. It would be great if you could whack an LED running light and a decent bulb in an old skool headlamp. Has Jan from Belgium explained how he did his?

Update
I took the bike to Dave Woods. He can't remove the immo on a 796. he uses a company called Rexxer to do all this kind of ECU reprogramming and they say it aint poossible yet. However, they did say that you can cut the immo wiring loop thing out of the clocks and just keep that bit, which "should" allow you to change the actual clocks. I haven't done this yet as Mr HMRC want some money from me before I go spanking more on bikes. If I do it I am sure I will do a show off post.

here's how I've done it:
Parts I used: - headlight of the old monster model - U-bracket of the old monster model - home made dashboard mounts - Speedy moto top yoke (http://www.ducati-motorcycle-parts.c...p_03-0205.aspx) - carbon headlight brackets - HID light I used the original u-bracket which is used on the old monsters to hold the headlight and dash and modified it - cut off the bottom part so you keep only the u and welded a plate in front and behind on the bottom part of the u. I changed my top yoke for a speedy moto top yoke. as you can see in the link this has 2 points on the front side normally used to mount the dashboard of the original monster. I drilled out these mounting points and used them as a top fixing point for the u-bracket and as a mounting point for the home made dashboard mounts. On the bottom yoke there are 2 mounting points normally used to mount the headlight connector, these I used as bottom mounting points for the u-bracket. You need to change the electrical connector of the old headlight since the new headlight uses a different type. Both use 3 wires, so it is just a matter of switching connectors. Since I was working on the headlight, installing the HID was just the next step. It has the same H4 bulb form so this is just a straight swap. The rectifier of the HID is mounted on the bottom of the dashboard mount, nicely out of view. I hope this makes some sence, if not I'll be at the weekender in may where you can have a look. Best regards, Jan |
