Love the bit where they say ...
Note: 3.2L and 6.5L, product upgrades, and now the actual capacity is 3L and 6L

When one our lab guys at work did my Dell Ortos I believe he used Toluene and you wouldn't believe the colour of it, completely pitch black at the end. So i knew they had had a good clean. You can repeat the clean cycle with fresh liquid until it stays clear.

Gentlemen, it works!

I'll get some pics up later/tomorrow (forgot to take 'befores' of the first batch).

I've set it to 80deg, used 4L deionised water + 400ml carb cleaner fluid, and run the first batch through two 30min cycles. Got the second batch in for the first cycle at the moment - haven't changed the water yet, want to see how well it does between changes.

I got the water near boiling on the stove first, too - the machine is very slow to heat water up.

I've got a small Ultrasonic cleaner - just big enough to fit a stripped down carb and whilst it has a heater that will get very hot (accidentally left it on once and it melted some plastic parts!), it takes too long to warm up so I fill it with hot water to speed things up.

I've kept any plastic/rubber bits out (like the slide cage & diaphragm) - but is there actually any harm in putting them in?

I would not use Toluene even if you can get it as it is highly inflammable and harmful by inhalation!

Brake cleaner, usually isopropanol, is safer and not too costly.

I don't think that the cleaning solution or the vibes will harm the plastic and rubber parts, but the temperatures that you are using might cause problems?
80deg is rather high, unnecessary and possibly harmful.
If you read the instructions/recommendations on the container of your carb cleaner (which should be ultra-sound specific) it will probably state an optimum operating temperature. I would guess about 50 to 60degrees. a few people I know who operate these cleaners, only run them at about 20deg. (I try and get mine up to 50.)

Also coupled with the high temps, if you are employing 30 minute blasts, your machine might not last as long as it could. The instructions state 15 minute bursts with a five minute rest between, probably for a good reason? Yes it does take at least 15 minutes longer to do an hour's session, but it does give the heater longer to do it's stuff, which you might be surprised soon raises the temperature, especially with the ultra-sound running.
It's okay to use the solution for multiple sessions and leave it in the stainless tank in between. All the muck goes into suspension in the fluid and any remaining on the surface of your part, is removed during the rinse in clean clutch and brake cleaner afterwards.

Dennis Menace, yes I was quite alarmed at the suggestion of Toluene too! Not only unnecessary to use a solvent in ultra-sound but dangerous too. A gentle detergent is all they need.

The fluid suggested 50-80deg, so I went for the upper end, and aye I'd drop it for plastic etc bits. Instructions for the cleaner itself suggested a rest period after every 30min, which is what I did, but I probably should be wary that it's cheap.

I'm not going to worry about the other parts, and I'm pretty happy with the outcome - will try to get the pics up soon (but might end up being tomorrow).

Fair dinkum Jason. The one I use is borrowed so I do my best to look after it.
The listing on ebay says 15 minute bursts, but if you have the proper instructions, I can't argue can I. Glad it's working well for you.

Inconsistencies between the listing and the instructions? This I did not expect from high quality "value" products

You're probably right though, if I do that every time it's probably not going to last. I should know to dial it back a bit from the recommendations with cheap Chinese knock-offs.

Still - it's done a good job. Just reassembling the second one now. Need to work out the best way to measure the float heights.

Last picture - Run that through some of the wife's 15 dernier stockings (not while she's wearing them obviously) and you'll be able to use that again.
