Can't decide

Any ideas guys,
Can't decide on bike No3 (very close to being murdered by wife with this purchase).

Currently looking at different options with different pros and cons, keep going between:

M 1200R or an S - Power
M 821 - Less power but might be better for commuting and still scratching
M S4RS - nuff said
M S4 - Again less power and not an RS
Pani 899 - Nicest one of the pani's I think

or

a Street Triple of some description.

Any thoughts on those bikes........I used to own a triple so I know what i'd be getting with one of those.

Well I've got a 1200s and find the power very underwhelming considering it's supposed to be 150bhp. My beemer 1200 and my Suzuki 1400 both scamper off better than the 1200s, just don't sound as good.

Not really keen on the mt-07 and only like 75bhp . Had a scrambler Icon again only like 75bhp but it's a ducati so a bit more special....should probably have kept it....bike No4! (that would be death)

Never considered a SC PaulSmart, 790's aren't very pretty imo. 690's yes maybe; again not much power.

I really liked all of the Sport Classic range. Moto Rapido were selling an almost mint Paul Smart a couple of months ago on behalf of a customer. It went within a week for about £15k so you're looking at M1200 money. I took the Sport out when they were new and it was a hoot to ride for about 30 mins until the riding position became unbearable. I don't think you'd find the engine appreciably different from the Evo's though.

I've a feeling whatever you choose will probably have come out of Bologna!

I was into sports bikes (not in a weird way, I should add) and had a ZX-6R and a GSX-R600 at the same time. I got rid of both of them and bought a Monster 696! Yes it's a bit of a left turn, but the truth of it is that the little 696 was way more fun than either of those 'rice rockets' and it reignited my love of riding.

OK so after a year I craved more power again, hence the 1100 evo, but really I see that as just a more powerful 696, 'cos it basically is, and it's still not silly power at 100bhp or whatever they are. It just means you can use more of it on the road

I like the 1200R, but for me it would have been 50bhp wasted.

Okay so you have the Evo but forgive me, what is bike #2 and what is your main use of them?

I tend to agree with Slob on this one in as much as lower power tends to be more fun to ride fast especially when bikes with big power these days tend to be wrapped in electronic wizardry to make them rider friendly and in my opinion less involving to ride.

Then again the newest motorcycle I own is my 1997 900 so maybe my opinion is not overly relevant despite having ridden some current models.

Either way, if I was in the market for a currently available new motorcycle I don’t think my money would be going Ducati’s direction except maybe a Scrambler Classic if I REALLY had to choose a bike from Bologna.

Good point with the less power more fun thing. Mostly that’s what the evo is for (definitely being kept, way too attached to it). Mostly used for scratching and a bit of commuting when the mood takes me or I start to notice I’m no hitting my target miles for the year.

2nd bike is a vfr800fi; the best one That’s mostly used for touring/two up and commuting also.

So now I’m getting attracted to a sunny Sunday machine. With lots of power…maybe.

But then that’s why I kind of liked the idea of an 821 nice and quick but much more usable. Then again what better Sunday bike than an S4RS

Hmmm it is always tricky and obviously not only a nice position to be in looking for another bike but a very personal decision.

With that in mind and if I had the bikes you do, I think I would be looking at something completely different again.

So if it was mostly a Sunday bike (yet keeping it modern as you seem to favour) I would be thinking something a little more lazy along the lines of one of the modern retro types such as Triumph Bobber, Yam XSR900, or BMW R Nine T.

More than enough go in the last two to keep you entertained if you decide to press on a bit through the twisty bits I would think while still keeping things relatively sensible speed wise.

Funny thing is they all make more power than my old 900 (as does my Thundercat) and yet I never feel the Monster’s particularly lacking in the real world thanks to the way it makes it’s torque.

I do rather like the R Nine T though.

S4 or S4RS if you can find s nice one, would compliment the 1100 nicely and still both classic monsters. There's a couple of nice S4 Fogartys for sale at Ducati manchester and one in Preston. Thats what I have and they are very rare limited editions and there were only ever 10 in the UK so would seem a better investment if you were looking at spending over 10k as bound to hold the value more than a newer bike. The Sport Classic the same value wise but riding position too extreme to be practical, still pretty though! I always fancied another 900SS but the FE version.
