Noise Perameters 2019
Anyone had any experience with 'DB Killers' ?
Was told last year that my Silmoto cans would not pass this year - I don't think they are excessivly noisy - but there, it's probably my hearing is not improving with age !! |

While there is a set noise level it does seem to be a very subjective area and some are more tetchy about it than others.
I've never seen them trying to test this as there are conditions to take an objective test, just waving a meter at the bike isn't going to do it. The DB killers just push in and are fixed with a bolt, yes they do make the exhaust quieter and fall out as easily as they go in . I had some for my high level Arrows on a 750, never actually used them as (despite being just a bit loud) I had always used testers at stations that I either knew or were a bit more old school in their tastes. If you are heading over towards Monmouth see if the bike tester (good guy young and loves his bikes) is in at Five Acres and ask if he thinks they're too loud. If not there's your new MOT station.

No actual noise limit specified then, its just wishy washy blurb and if pass MOT then presumably its been deemed acceptable and is legal?

The MOT just says your vehicle is safe at time of testing. Plenty of bikes out there with technically illegal exhausts, with MOTs.... Probably most of our membership?

As pointed out it noise is a very subjective thing, My S2R now has termis (Thanks to rac3r) which usually don't have the killers in and it sounds impressive. Louder than my 748R, the neighbours haven't complained ... Yet

measure openings in outlet eg 48mm
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycl...-/263870090183 search ebay (check seller feedback etc)(not this one i want 99%+, probably pay a bit more) drill outlet (measure twice, cut once) probably still need to fettle dbkiller to fit bolt in (not overtight/drop of medium threadlock), take to MOT.... Four 90Db sources combine to give a 96.02Db level, but no individual has produced more than 90Db.

Noise levels
, good point darkness, also worth noting acceptable background noise levels (back in the early 80's at least when I was involved in such things) is 68db, add 3 db to that and the noise effectively doubles. Decibels are on a logarithmic scale.

The report mentioned noise levels and the acceptability of the public for anti social levels in residential areas, but as noted by Chris, the monitoring system would be installed on main roads! It's, I think, another instant of government sound biting for effect. As others have said, sound levels, that is db's, work on a logarithmic scale, and our perspective of how loud a noise is perceived changes with the surroundings. Very difficult to successfully monitor.

Some one on the same vein also stated that noise was affecting horse activities and fishing!!
I'm sure that they'll cobble some detector out of something else not designed for the job, after all the radar guns primary component was designed for measuring the distance between vertical planes in the building trade. I'm sure that they can patch a sound activated baby alarm to a gatso and add enough BS to make it sound like a wonder machine. Probably find a lot less HD's around as virtually none of them seem to what you'd call stealthy

Think perhaps there's been a test site near me for a few years. Funny little 'xmas trees' on lampposts near airport.
or maybe polution sensors, what do you think? Last edited by slob; 09-06-2019 at 07:30 AM.. |
