This government which has proved itself totally useless in every respect, can't manage to fix holes in the road & can't afford to fund most councils or standard public services. I doubt they are suddenly going to reverse ten years of ineptitude and suddenly manage to achieve constant vehicle noise monitoring.

If there is any truth in this whatsoever, it will be some type of ticket issued by the plod to offending cars & bikes requiring them to be tested. Minimal penalty for first time offenders and dramatically increased fines etc for those who repeat. As long as the noise limits are reasonable, this will simply be a way of reeling in the idiot fringe. Of course the plan will fall down due to the lack of traffic police - though having said that I saw one for the first time in four months yesterday.

The general feeling seems to be that a "sound camera" cannot work and would be indiscriminate.
Lets have a look at what we can do with sound, as a species.

Starting with one of my heroes, Professor Leon Theramin from Russia. He was the fellow who invented the "Theramin". The first electronic musical instrument, with aerial and loop, played by interfering with electromagnetic fields. Not relevant here, but he also invented a passive bugging device, that was presented to the American Embassy hidden in a carved wooden " US Great Seal" and allowed agents to listen to every conversation in the room for years.
He also invented a listening device that looked at vibrations on windows and was able to monitor conversations held in the room behind glass from some distance... That was the '50s.

The military have been using a device for many years that can track the path of a bullet. It uses multiple antennae, and the unique sound signature of the bullet, to pinpoint the source. (used to find snipers in Afganistan) Later versions were coupled with autonomously aimed and fired weapons to respond instantly to the target..(frightening!)

Sound and radio waves behave in much the same way, so Radar and an animals echo-location can be compared very well. ( Did you know that a Bat has a unique muscle that closes it's ears when it clicks and opens it to listen to the echo. Radar has a valve which does the same thing.)
"Look down shoot down" Radar can identify and track multiple airborne targets and aim weapons onto them. Just apply this technology to sound and you can track multiple sound sources and identify them with a camera and read the number plate.

Every sound has a signature which can be recorded and analysed in detail. a recording of a roadside soundscape would reveal what vehicles are passing, how many cylinders they have and what revolutions they are running at (let alone what decibels).

What miffs me slightly about a system to penalise people for noisy exhausts is that exhausts are only a small part of the noise pollution problem. Most of the traffic noise comes from tyre roar, and then there is the grinding of lorry transmissions, the flapping of curtain siders and insecure tarps and wrappings.... You know what I mean when you can't hear your termis over the din of an artic', when you pass it on the motorway..

So put all that together with something of similar power to your portable wireless telephone and you have a device which can tell you have a Werkes "amplifier" on your bike and read your number plate. Never mind that you were riding beside an HGV..Straps a flappin', diesel a belchin'. or on a UKMOC run with your mates .. You're nicked sonny...

…...And on a lighter note...

"Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road. One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office.

Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style:

"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto, your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it.
Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment. Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert status, and was able to override the automated defence system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was destroyed.

Good Day..."

drive chain, dry clutch

a guy waits near my house v.early to give mate lift to work,
if he listens to radio, whole small van becomes loudspeaker

obviously urban (rural) myth v. different radar frequencies

No Mark, every lamppost for a mile of bypass alongside the airport (and not on a bus route), I'm guessing air or noise pollution (CIA mind control is covered by my tin foil hat)
