M750 barrel rebore ???
I have a spare M750 rear barrel i bought it to replace the damged barrel on my bike which is in perfect nick apart from 2 missing fins from the accident
the spare barrel in good condition except for a 12mm x1mm x 0.5mm deep gouge near top of bore the supplier a well known ducati spares breaker has refused to take it back and now i need to make it functional can I get it rebored or replated ???

That sounds like too much damage to put right with a re-bore and plate. (Can you get oversize pistons anyway?)
I would have a go at welding some more fins onto the good barrel and keep the same piston in it. It's not rocket science to shape up some new fins from ally sheet and weld them on.. They only have to be tacked where you can get to. Or if you're brave you can knock off any fins that are in the way and weld those back on once you've got to the awkward ones.

That is verging on the edge of canyon rather than gouge. You'd need some heavy boring to get that out so not really amendable to fixing unless it was an ultra-rare bike.
When I was a lad it was the sort of thing that the dockyards in Pompy could have turned around in a few days, they had some awesome skilled people there and the time to do odds on the side as apprentice 'training tasks'.

Cylinders can be repaired and replated, even big holes etc. they strip the plating, weld the hole, machine/rebore & replate.

my present engine is perfect except for 2 damaged fins on rear barrel ,,,I think the answer is to weld new fins onto my good barrel
Im thinking of taking the supplier of the spare barrel to small claims court as his sales pitch was that the barrel was i perfect condition which it clearly aint but i only paid £50 for it so it may not be worth it and i can cut the fins off and a welder i know can reweld them onto my good barrel

That sounds like a plan because clearly the barrel isn't any good. May make a novel plant pot holder or paperweight though.

For fin repairs if the part that is missing is big welding the broken part or a piece of appropriate sheet back is a good option, it saves on time and heat input to the part.
If the damage is small or access to weld a piece in is not possible (between other fins) then the fin can be built up by building up bead on bead. Essentially it is just a big edge weld and repeat, manual 3d metal printing if you like, followed by filing and sanding back to shape. I've built back snapped raised lugs and pieces of engine covers and cases that had parts broken out using that technique. If the buildup is big there is the possibility of pulling the part out of shape especially if the part has thin walls and is aluminum because it has high solidification shrinkage. Color matching the weld to cast is problematic if the part is not to be painted and matching surface finish with the cast is something I'm yet to look into though I've always thought some form of blasting might do it. Andy
