fuel filler cap breather

When I was wiping up the overfilled petrol from the top of my tank , like you do, I found a small rubber tube ( 1cm by 0.5cm ) . It looks like it's supposed to fit into the top of the breather hole ( or is it an overflow ? ) in the top of the tank and connects the hole to the filler cap when the cap is shut. The tube is knackered and there is a real chance it will end up in the petrol tank itself if I try to glue it back from whence it came so my question is can I just leave it out ?

I'm not sure that I recognise the little tube that you describe.. Sounds like a little piece of stripped insulation from a wiring job to me?

I do have a couple of very comprehensive documents about filler caps and the whole fuel system. Kindly sent to me some years ago by the late great Capo.
They should have all you need to know and more, but I don't know how to post a word document on here!
If you pm me your email I will happily forward them to you.

Thinking on; @Rob, If you know how to post up a word document including (many) pictures, it might be a good bit of info to have as a sticky on one of the technical forums?

sorry, some of the images have been swallowed by photobucket, I’ll have to dig out the original docs to fix it

Yes that one!..

I was going to link to it as I just realised that you had already posted it up a long time ago.
I notice that the pictures have expired though. I've mailed you the original complete with pictures and another Capo sent me about fitting the filler cap.

The little rubber tube should be there. It's got a flange chuckle around it that goes into a recess around the breather fitting.

Crust

Love that expression "chuckle". I've never heard that before but fits perfctly.

You don't happen to have a part number for the tube do you?

Thanks

Ducati Omaha for parts catalogs. Try that. It's probably there.

To finish this thread I managed to buy the part from the Netherlands.

The only way I found to fit it was to take off the complete filler cap assembly which allows better access to the hole the rubber tube fits in, and then it's easy to fit.

I think the tube acts as a drain for the key hole in the cap ( and has nothing to do with venting ). That makes sense to me otherwise water could get in when the key is fitted and it would otherwise drip directly into the tank.
