Did you pop the gudgeon pins and remove the pistons with the barrels, or after? Would it be easy enough to slip the barrels back over the rings if the pistons were left in tact? (I'm only removing the barrels/heads not splitting the crankcases) I don;t have a ring compressor thingy....

Personally I've never got on with the leaving the pistons in the barrels system, too many things to fiddle with when reassembling (spring clips falling into crankcase etc.)

I fit the pistons to the rods and then use a home-made ring compressor which is basically a strip of shim steel and a large jubilee clip - this is more compact than most bought items and is a doddle to use in the confined space available.

That looks interesting though no idea where I'd get the spring steel from. Any rough idea of the clip size so I can get one in advance?

I had the (0.4mm) shim steel knocking around in my toolbox from years ago but I have seen similar size steel banding used for binding wooden packing crates, needs to be wide enough to span all 3 rings.

As for the jubilee clip, a 900 piston is 92mm diameter, so you need one with a range that covers that (80 - 120mm?) probably cost around £3 - £4.

A decent engineering supplies shop should have both.

Ah, forgot about that - I did have tons of that packing strip steel but I bet I threw it all out. I'll have to check if I kept any...

Thanks mate!

Love it.
Running it in'll be fun, you think "I'll take it to 6K" and then try and stop the revs rising ;-)

I went from 1873g to 632g obviously one or two other mods, I just wasn't prepared for quite how quick it picked up.

The ST2 engine is new to me so with the lightening it should be awesome.

The primary gears are the next victim.

Cool

Looking nice at svelt.

Mine are getting the good news at the moment. I think the crank is getting done as well just for good measure.

I'm still on the hunt for the bigger Pistons as well.
