Cool Monster Project (Refresh)

If all goes well (I will know by Monday) I might be picking up an ST2 for the engine and electrics.





I mocked up this 999 fuel tank on a Monster frame just to see how much of the seat I would have to chop to retain the same shaped rear.

I don't want to chop up the frame but I do want to give it a total refresh after 15 years of loyal service and modding.

I will SORN it in August and then start the refresh.

Things are looking up, just bought a Ducati ST2 for spares tonight, £450 all in.

So once the Monster is taken off the road and the SS is put on the road the project can start.

I think I am right in thinking that the ST2 clocks and ECU are linked somehow, how can I bypass this so that I can run a single aftermarket speedo unit?

Any other dramas that I need to know about would be appreciated.

If there is a immobiliser like on new-er monsters then you need someone to edit your ECU so immobiliser is disabled ..... or remove as much as you can from ST2 dash and plug in only the immobiliser bit

I think it is, it has a red key if that makes any difference.

Ok there is an immobiliser.

So now if you want security then you remove anything you can from dash to make it smaller, then you pack remaining in to smallest package possible.

Then you identify power supply and immobiliser circuit and make a bypass so it is always connected with cable long enough to your "secret location".

Same cable powering stock dash can be spliced in and Y piece made so you can power new dash at right end and run cables to power the other dash where needed.

Which airbox will you be using as if you are going for IE one then fitting smaller gel battery will give you space for dash leftover or going even smaller with li-on battery will give you also space for toolbox

Also that tank will need support beam going from shock mount (old tank mount) under the tank to the other part of frame.

If you do not want to modify the frame you could do a clip-on style bar

Am I right in thinking you can get the ECU flashed so it does not need the immobilizer or red key bit?

I have decided to keep the original bodywork, I like it too much, but it will be repainted and the rest re-powder coated.

Yep you can get ECU flashed with immobiliser off.
While you are at it get CJS to map it as well

Keep red key and declare on insurance that you have immobiliser. Even if it gets nicked and recovered they flashed it to start it ......

Much easier I know

I am using loom from 2001 900SSie as it was last one with no immobiliser.

With the SS fully up and running, I now need to decide how far to go with the Monster.

I have a replacement fuel tank (metal injection one), I'm going for an electronic dash/single clock, clip-ons

The fuel tank will be sprayed black with a red version of the decals on my SS:



The ST2 is stripped down, the Monster gets stripped down next weekend.

First of all it is not a refresh. Call it Monster evolution 2 I call my current build version 4.0

Do what you want I am going for loosing weight but not at a cost of practicality and reliability.

For example thinking of chopping frame and attaching alloy subframe. Lighter this and that, new dash but looking at that one.....
