A slide hammer is probably the correct way to do it.

Have a look in the Haynes Book of Lies - bearings can be had from BSL.

Scotty
To aid tapping out the bearings wrap a couple of old towels / rags round the bearing housing and pour a couple of kettles of freshly boiling water over the lot . Leave for about 5 mins to let the heat seep into the housing and expand . The bearings should then Tapp out a lot easier!!!!!!!! To refit new bearings.Place in a very cold frezzer about an hour before you start the job so they are cold and have contracted .They should then drop into place a lot easier Another tip is to use the old bearing outer race to help tap the new bearing in Hope this helps or am i teaching my Gran to Suck eggs |

must admit im a great fan of freezers and boiling oil err water
but ive given up on that cleaned and re greased in situ i think the stiff ness in it was a piece of the seel that had come off and was stuck in the race seems loads better now like changed belts today and im sure that it must be the end of my bikes shelf life cos the battery is dribbeling all over now muss grumble , in fact im sure im nearly angry, id love to boot the battery across a field but im sure i'd only hurt my foot |

If there is stuff coming out of the battery it sounds like it might be overcharging and boiling. Stick a test meter across it with the engine running at 3000 rpm and measure the voltage. Should be around 14 volts.

Maybe its a location thang! I went to take my baby out last night and the bastard just wouldn't start. I threatened to throw it off the nearest cliff, set fire to it, and replace it with something I can just get on and go, and it still wouldn't start. The twat. Put it back on charge and the optimate goes into overdrive to recharge. I have a horrible feeling the black art of electricity is involved here. Bugger.
