The bad news, for Ducati traditionalists at least, is that, on top of the rumoured switch from a trellis frame on the new Monster (project 1803), the new V4 Multistrada "Granturismo" engine does away with desmodromic valves

in favour of a conventional valve train.

The good news is that maintenance intervals will be over 40k miles, which is pretty impressive.

I wonder if the new Monster will go down the traditional valve train route?

I have to admit that given the option of a V-twin or V-four in a spar frame I'll go and buy a generic jap model.
Brand loyalty isn't just about the 'name', it isn't about practicality, it's the feeling, it's heart and I think it's starting to AWOL

I suppose if your two big cylinders have changed to four small ones and your few heavy valves have become a multitude of lightweights then you have little need of desmodromics.
Question is .. Do you still have the same soul ?

my new bike is not going to be a Ducati its going to be a Benelli 752s as i am so impressed by using its baby brother 302 in Thailand which had superb handling , power , torque and sound and quality the 752 will be epic ,, the 302 could hit 100mph easy so a 752 will be good for over 130mph with twice the power and torque ,, yes they are a bit on heavy side but so what ,,,at leas than £6500 a bargain .

I don’t think I’m a brand snob, but I do agree about the ‘soul’ thing. Whatever it is about this bike (and indeed the 696 I had) there is a feeling I’ve had with them that I didn’t have with my Japanese bikes. I kind of think of them as perfectly imperfect. So if that was removed from the ownership experience then maybe the Monster’s USP is removed too, which would be a shame.

I’m sure the new bikes will be good though, and I’m fully aware that I’ve only owned two Monsters that are very similar to each other, whereas many of you have owned and experienced Monsters of all ages.

Its the same ethos that Audi has done with Lamborghini.

Ducati is slowly morphing into red BMWs, very efficient but dull as ditchwater.

Reading elsewhere Audi is thinking strongly of offloading - to pay for the VW/Audi emissions debacle.

'Bad' news only as far as I'm concerned, can't see the 'good'. Desmo is the heart of it for me. 40k service interval...well for quite a few owners that might mean every 15 + years, did I do that sum right? So some pretty old oil and filter in there, maybe the rest of the bike will have fallen to bits or become 'unsupported' from a spares point of view. I love most things Ducati but these moves will cure me of that, and a lover scorned will not go back I'm afraid.

VW group taint everything they touch , emmisions scandals recalls , in the car insustry they have the biggest warranty claims bill and customer complaints from all their main brands ,, they sell 13m vehicles s a year and pay out $4.7bn in warranty costs when Toyota group sell 13m vehicles a year and its warranty costs are $986m

Since VW took over Ducati prices of spares have more than doubled ,, sure they kept the brand alive and invested but so many niche models and complexity already one can see huge numbers of newer model used Ducatis on the market ,im skeptical about the future of the brand ,,but I dont really like any of the new models anyway they dont float my little boat .
