Rear tyre changed.

Changed the rear tyre today, a very easy job apart from torqueing up the wheel. Getting the wheel off was simple, old tyre was easy to get off, new tyre almost fell onto the wheel and it balanced up straight away. But what a job fitting the wheel, trying to torque it up was a real pita by myself as I couldn't stop the wheel rotating. I'll have to get Mrs Mick on it tomorrow. How does anyone else get theirs tightened? Torque setting seems high as my speed triple only needs 148nm, monster almost 100nm more.

Have a look at this thread:

The locking bar makes the job a doddle single-handed.

I tied a rope through the wheel to the paddock stand and the stand on it to stabilise, works fine

When I removed the rear wheel of my MV Agusta Brutale I used a ratchet strap through the rear wheel and hooked around the ABBA stand. 220-240Nm to tighten!

The manual I have says 176Nm +/- 5% for the rear wheel nut, so not that much more than a Speed Triple

I was told the torque for the 55mm wheel nut is 230nm. Can anyone confirm this?

That's what my 1200R manual says:
230Nm* with 'Grease B', Molybdenum Disulphide Grease (eg Shell Retinax HDX2)
* +/- 5%

yes, 1200 has superbike size rear spindle (and 50% more power than 1100)

Thanks Slob, looked at my manual has no mention of torque value and no mention of grease on nut. Tells me to go to dealer as its a specialist job. I will get some grease on it when I can. Odd thing though, nut came off dry, no grease on it at all.

The torque specs will be from the workshop manual rather than the owner's manual. If you plan on doing any jobs yourself, you should definitely invest in one as it's worth its weight in gold. I couldn't manage without my Evo manual, (despite its many errors!).
