Maintenance free chain

BMW have just developed a maintenance free chain and is going to offer them for sale to non beemers, good luck for Ducati as they are in 525 size.

That's interesting, although I thought Beemers were all shaft drive!

Bit disappointed with how my DID is wearing, feeling harsh after only just over 8000 miles. I keep it lubed and adjusted.

the smaller (rotax) gs models are belt, to be competitive the s1000rr uses a chain, about 10% less transmission loss than a shaft.

Probably a rather good plan, an owner of an RR I know says that it eats tyres and chains.
What kind of premium ££ does that have I wonder?

How can it possibly be maintenance free when its environment is exposed, water, salt and grit, very high point loads on the teeth of the sprockets and a requirement to turn through 180 degrees twice every revolution of the rear wheel?
The only way to make it "maintenance free" would be to encase it in a sealed enclosure (eg inside the swinging arm?) in an oil bath with an automatic tensioning device.
