re gearing the M1000

having put a few miles on my M1000 I'm finding the gearing a bit "tall"
for my liking
What changes if any have other M1000 owners tried?
I think the standard sprockets are 15 front 39 rear

Terry,

I hardly ever found 6th gear with the standard sprocket. Changed to front 14 and now she runs at 70mph in 6th at around 3800 revs. Not as much clutch slipping round town now, which makes life a little easier. As far as fuel consumption goes cant comment, as I ride for enjoyment whatever the cost!

Your new "mate" looks like a bundle of trouble - enjoy!

Thumbs up

Best option would be to go for a 42 rear cog, but you may need a new (longer) chain so can get pricey

Cheapest option is a 14 front, makes the chain run through a tighter arc causing a litlle premature wear if you let it get dirty or run dry, but if you fit a Scotoiler you don't have to worry

That's the same gearing on my 900SS and I found the same thing, gearing too tall. I changed to a 14 tooth front and never looked back. Also went up one on the back as well, but this was a step too far and I went back to standard rear / 14 front, which seems about perfect. Now pulls 6000rpm at 100mph.

Like JR, I fitted a 14t front sproket to my M1000 and it makes 6th a usable gear and also easier to ride around town. I've done around 7000 miles on the 14 and I'm well pleased with the change.
