What have I done?

Guessing game time.

I've brought another Ducati on a bit of a whim, but it's a project that I've had in my head for a while, and should be complete by next spring.
But won't be selling my M900.

It runs and rides very well but is a little tatty and has some faults.
It's the newest bike I've ever owned.

What is it?
It is @1000CC
2 valves per cylinder
Air Cooled
It has a full fairing.
It was @ £2K
It is of the later Red key, Immobiliser era.
It has a standard fitment Ohlins rear shock
It doesn't have 3 spoke alloy wheels

For those of you thinking MS1000 - Nope, it's not very comfortable at all.

It is not CANBUS
It does not have underseat exhausts.

What do you think?

Yes, most were 5 spoke I think, although I have seen some with the standard 3 spoke wheels but I don't know what the model is of those (Dark maybe or just Sport rather than Supersport). My SS bible doesn't cover the later models.

Oh, too many clues obviously.

This image is very flattering, it's clean but not that nice, and has a 'few' electronics issues!

And I forgot to add that the bodywork is (IMO) as ugly as sin.

It will end up over the winter with a set of Carbie SS fairings and a superlight single seat unit.
The 1000CC EFI Twin spark engine is a dream though.
I'll end up with the best of both worlds I think.

I did the same thing last year, only mine is a 750 for good reason.

Glad to hear that you are getting rid of the horrid fairing. What were they thinking??

Mine is no better looking for having less fairing, but all the red parts will be coming off and the whole bike re-imagined.

Those SS are actually very good motorbikes hiding under unnecessary plastic and fitted with silly handlebars.

Unfortunately the square headlamp in the earlier fairings was absolutely awful and led to one of the most terrifying night rides I ever had, not helped by the proximity of the dipswitch to the light switch! (later switch gear is much better though.)

I've already checked and the Carbie headlamp/fairing bracket almost bolts straight on, and the Superlight seat unit is just a couple of brackets away from fitting.

Obviously it won't be that simple when I get into it properly, and I do need to sort out some electronics issues which is going to be the hard bit.
For example the warning lights are not working, but they are LEDs on the clocks PCB, and the immobiliser is half built into the ECU and half the clocks.
The 1000 is completely different in that respect to the 750/900SSie.

But I do work in Aviation electronics, so know a few people who can help, and I have a complete set of Carbie bodywork and SL seat hanging around in the garage already.

It still has a long MOT, so I'm going to enjoy it for a couple of months I think.

If the old style bodywork fits, then that is the best thing you can do. I mean they are good bikes just a bit ugly, although I could live with ugly for that sort of money. I did borrow a 900SSie from a mate for a while and they do ride pretty much just the same as the old ones really just with a better engine and that was just a 900 ie. The 1000DS engine is even better.

Have you tried the twin spark 1000ie?
it's a step on again from the 900ie in terms of grunt.

I rode a work colleagues Multistrada 1000 that has the same engine and couldn't believe how good it felt for an air cooled big twin.

The 1000 is more than a bit ugly body wise, but I see it as the ultimate development of the 2V aircooled engine I like so much.
The fact that it also has Ohlins rear shock and some other sophistication makes it more tempting.

The bike has the tacky Carbon cans fitted which sound really nasty, rattly and harsh rather than deep and rumbly, but the standard cans came with it so they are going back on.

When I fit the Carbie/SL bodywork I also have a genuine pair of SL cans to go on it.
They are a bit higher than standard, but not right up by the seat unit like some aftermarket cans.
I really like that mid-position.

One fewer SSIE fairings is a huge plus to my eyes.
I have seen interesting things done with imola style seats and half fairings instead.

Those SSie bikes can be amazing bargains, I hope the electronics do not prove too troublesome. Does it come with a 3 wire alternator?
