Pretty sure the genuine filters have seven flats which annoyingly means you either have to buy a genuine tool or aftermarket equivalent.
Lots of people have had issues over the years with genuine filters not sealing properly though so K&N oil filters are a popular choice with their welded on hex allowing you to use a spanner to tighten/remove instead of a conventional filter tool.

As Flip mentioned, the OE filter on mine started leaking so I replaced it with a K&N so that I could torque it to spec and also for ease of removal.
Prior to that I used a Baby Boa jar opener, which worked a treat and can also be used elsewhere, for example, to unscrew the crankcase breather. This from http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/s...d.php?p=572892 Quote:

I believe Ducati recently changed the configuration of the flats and generic filter wrenches no longer fit. Another plus for the strap wrench in Luddite’s post.
I know there are quite a few K&N filter fans on here, if you use them please use a torque wrench to do them up otherwise you risk tearing the hex off the filter or, worse, having it fail later (they are banned in AMA racing for this reason, which is quite ironic for something originally marketed as a ‘race oil filter’) |

+1 for the cheapo strap wrench. They are just the job for removing the crankcase breathers. I got a small and large one for a couple of quid. The small one got my crankcase breather out dead easy and now lives in the kitchen where it is used for undoing those stubborn pasta sauce lids or the glued on marmite jar lid! Essential kit and would get a filter off in seconds!

Although I now use either a hex nut Hiflo or K&N, back in the day a screwdriver and hammer always did the job..

I was attached to 9 Independent Sq RE, in the 70s for a short tour, i am 5ft 6", and all the lads in the unit were a minimum 5ft 10" if i remember correctly.
I got some stick on deployment, but soon fitted in brilliant unit. i was with them when the riots were happening in Long Kesh, and they were sent in, i was in the air above the action in a Puma with the L42A1 (T) and dropping gas canisters into the rioters that was a scary situation for a little lad from a mining family |

Hi Les, seems like we're from the same era? Sorry but I was on your Air-Taxi (Blue) side. Back i the early 80s I was attached to 16 Sqn Raf Regt. Rapier was our stock-in-trade, but in 'Lager' we were able to have fun with all sorts of noise making stuff if you catch my drift. However, Ancient History now! Anyways, welcome to the Forum, hope you enjoy the Monster..
