1200R dead battery

Evening all

While queuing to get in to Nick Masons open day to dribble at his bonkers car collection my 12R decides not to restart after turning it off in the queue as it was boiling me alive. Showing all the signs of a failed battery which is the second oem since new, both let go after 14-15 months.

So, recommendations please for something better

The usual yuasa batts are good or motobatt.

Or you could look at Li-Ion batts but beware for the risks. A guy I know flys micro lights and their batteries are amazing with massive amperage in tiny sizes you could look at those too.

I’ve had a shido lithium iron for about 4 months and it starts it well. This has inbuilt cell balancing, whereas the previous Shorai ( lasted 5 years) hadn’t.
Mine being an older model, i’ve upgraded the reg/rectifier, which i presume yours will have as standard.

I'd have to very predictably say Motobatt, going on my good experience with mine.

So did you get into Nick Mason's and did you meet him and have you got any pictures of his cars and how the hell did you find out about that and is he going to open up again....(And must use less and's!)

He'll probably be open next year again, I didn't bother this year but reports are that it's a victim of it's own success. They may need to sort out the access to the parking and hence Perdo's problem.

It was in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, garden are quite stunning and about £100 million worth of cars on display including his 250 GTO, worth about £50 million alone. Alas I didn’t get to see too much as I was picking a van up...

To slightly hi jack your thread Ped (hope your battery issue is sorted btw), for another great Supercar day out you could do worse than pop along to the Goodwood motor circuit here in West Sussex for one of Peter Saywell’s charity days- there’s two dates left for this year.

He’s a local (to me) businessman with a love and collection of ridiculous super cars- think the likes of Zonda’s, Porsche 918 and a La Ferrari (yes, really he has one).

All his cars’ number plates have AOG in the registration standing for ‘Aircraft On Ground’, which is how his company functions by getting parts to airlines super quick minimising their ground time- obviously at premium prices.

Along with a load of other four wheeled silliness from his personal collection there’ll be a host of his supercar owning friends and for a small donation to charity you can choose a car, jump in a passenger seat and be taken round for a few laps of the historic circuit.

What is the standard battery?

My 12r has the original battery, it's 2yrs old.
I hook mine up to a optimate 5 regularly which not only charges the battery, but also puts it through a regular conditioning/ health check. This seems to keep the battery in top condition.
Worth trying with the new unit.

I have the pukka Ducati version, I’m beginning to think it’s not a “smart” charge, just a basic item with a posh badge...

Bike has been on it for 24 hours, battery voltage is about 13.2v and the bike starts just fine. Going to leave it unplugged for 24 hours and see what the voltage is then

So checked a few things...

1. Put the charger on the bike, 24 hours later battery is at 13.2v and Bike started normally
2. With Bike running, checked the voltage going to the battery, 14.4v so all normal.
3. Left the charger off for 24 hours (and unplugged the tracker) to see if the battery was dying or being drawn down, voltage at 13.2v so that seems normal
4. Measured the voltage drop when hitting the starter, dropped to about 10.5v until it started (almost immediately) the returned to normal 13.2v when turned off. I’m leaded to believe that might be a touch low.
5. Will check the charger tomorrow

Conclusion? Fooked if I know...

That being said, the circumstances where a little unusual... queuing to park, Bike got to 106-107 degrees so fans kicked in, would that cause a big drain enough to stop it starting?
