side stand bracket bolt stripped
The lower bracket bolt on the side stand is stripped and I'm looking at a helicoid fix. There are a few cheaper types on eBay but anyone tried them and are they as good. A helicoil kit with the tools is about £40, the ones on eBay are £10.
First time I'll be doing this and expecting it should be easy enough, the casings are aluminium? right. Any advice welcome |

Never done a Helicoil myself, and no experience of the cheap ebay ones.
However I do know that Wurth do oversized ones so if you manage to cock it up, there is the chance of a get out of jail free card with a Wurth one. Personally I'd go for the best you can afford with an important thread like that.

If the helicoil require an oversize drill I would definitely make a jig ( from some thick aluminium plate or some 8mm steel) possibly off the other two bolt holes in the locality to ensure the hole is perpendicular to the casing assuming you will be using a hand held drill. Also I would ensure that you have a positive stop on the depth so you do not effectively hole the sump.

I've just used this kit to fit a helicoil insert to the aluminium side plate of my Gilera. Worked a treat.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131-PIECE...S/232299285498 The kit has everything you need to do the job except a tap wrench so you'll also need something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x-M3-M6-...9/382814843559 or this. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M3-8-M5-1...t/192634123908 You could use an adjustable spanner on the tap but you'll have more control with a proper wrench and you need to ensure the tap goes in completely square. I was lucky as I could get the piece on my pillar drill so it was easy to keep everything lined up. As 350TSS says, if you're going to use a hand drill then knock up a holder to make sure your drilling stays centred. It didn't mention it in the instructions but I also used some blue Loctite on the outside of the insert to make sure it didn't go anywhere once in. |

I have several Recoil sets 4-12mm they work well also a Chinese set in 10mm x1mm and that is also really good ,, the critical thing is when you drill the old thread out to use correct drill size and depth ,,and get all the crap out and use grease ,

As long as you can drill straight and use a tap you'll be fine, either a helicoil or Wurth Timesert will do the job.

Thank all, some good advice, particularly the idea of making a jig to keep the drill square.
i ended up buying a v-coil kit, was a good price and seems good quality. |

Good news - see you spacered the bracket well away from the crankcase to give the best chance of perpendicularity (is there such a word?)
