Speed camera bitch .. again.

Had a NIP from the Manchester police drop on the doormat this morning.
59mph in a 50 zone.
Checking google maps, this was on a dual carriageway stretch of the A34 on the outskirts of Cheadle Hulme.
The road appears to be a clear run of bypass between roundabouts, with no junctions, buildings, entrances etc along the entire stretch.
It gets tiresome, doesn't it ?

Sorry, but I just needed to bitch about it.
No more clean licence for me for a couple of years then.

Sorry to hear that. Do you not have the option of a speed awareness course in your area? You're in the qualifying 'zone' (57-64 m.p.h.). I think you need a Section 172 form.

No points and no need to inform your insurers so it'd be worth checking if you're not sure. This is a national scheme so, even though you were caught in Manchester, you could do the course in Leicester.

I did a speed awareness course on Tuesday this week. (42 in a 30 a few weeks ago, so just snuck in)

Think I'd rather have taken the points, it's a morning of my life I won't get back!

Seriously, I've discovered, and it was confirmed at the course, that some insurance companies are now asking for disclosure on doing the course, and loading your policy.
I should say the women running the course were so annoyed by this, as they honestly believe you are a much safer driver after doing their course, and that the insurance companies should lower your premium after you've done it

Best check your small print.

Its such a drag; 59 in a 50, anyone would think the police had nothing better to do...

Its all about the money imo. I hope you can get away with a course, though once you pay the attendance and lose you pay, it actually costs more...

Attending a speeding awareness course is not classed as a conviction requiring the ticking of the box on insurance quotation forms to disclose such an offence in the last 5 years. Choosing to attend a course will avoid penalty points being added to a motorist’s licence, maintaining a clean licence in some cases, and because course data isn’t held by the DVLA, it can’t be checked by insurance companies.

I attended court to argue my case .. fruitlessly, I know, but sometimes you just have to go through the process.

At the speed you were doing you should be eligible to do the course as long as your last offence was more than 3yrs ago.

I got nicked on the Tunnel Run (which is ironic considering the gridlock on that night!).

I got the course option and took it (no brainer really).

To be honest I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. In fact it kicked off my interest in bike training courses... I should be doing my third one in August.

.... And now you know why I was observing most of the speed limits on the section of the Coast to coast run that I led.

Thinking this through a little further ....

From google earth, it would seem that I was nabbed by a camera on a bridge over the road I was on.
This is probably why I didn't spot it.
Now, it just happens that I was trying a satnav for the first time on a bike, for this journey.
I'm something of an immediate convert and will use it more often.
I don't really need the voice instructions but it might be useful to have the speed trap warnings.
So, I'm thinking of bluetoothing my helmet.

If anyone has any suggestions as to the best kit, I'm all ears.

Then I got to thinking, it might be nice if you could get an audible notification of all speed limit zones .. to save having to focus on the signs.
Nothing obtrusive, but perhaps 3 bleeps for 30, 4 for 40, and 5 for 50 ... anything above that doesn't really need anything.
Repeated at suitable intervals, and obviously whenever the limit changed.
If Big Brother could be kept locked out, I'd go for a system like that.

Tbh, looking at the road in question, I probably would have assumed a 60 limit for that stretch anyway.
Hence my 59 would have been pretty decent.

I don't know the road in question but in all likelihood, it probably was a 60 until recently...

Bad luck: are you sure that it is properly signed as a 50mph limit?

Dual carriageway is usually 70mph unless you are in a van or HGV, or it's in an urban area [With a 'system of streetlighting'] when it defaults to 30mph, though by publishing Orders and erecting prescribed signage the local authority can change either to 40mph, 50mph or 60mph?
