Oil Level - Correct?

Hi All

Can you please tell me if this is the correct amount of oil in the engine or does it need a top up and where to on the glass?

Picture taken on paddock stand

Thanks in advance

There should be an aluminium plate level badge between the lines. They do fall off sometimes or fade but as long as it's in the middle on a flat surface I wouldn't be worrying. There are at least 2 badges with different images so if your searching for one make sure year apparent.

After a Google search I believe the high and low level are on the actual engine casing.

Does this sound right for 98 M900?

There were two different plates depending on the model year. The earliest Monsters had 43310281A

And the later models, (including your 1998 Monster) used 43310281C.

As you can see, the level lines are different on the two plates and I think the higher lines represent about 250ml additional oil.

Your plate is apparently still available and, according to Ducati Coventry, is only £3.90.

The plate mounts between the two raised lines on the crankcase.

The oil level plate fits between the two ribs cast into the casing, so the high level is just under the top rib and the low level is midway between the ribs.

More significant than the difference between the two plates is whether your bike was on the sidestand or “level” when you took the photo’s. With the right quantity of oul in it pretty much disappears from the window whilst on the side stand.

Looks like the oil is on the Min level.

I hope I haven't pointed you in the wrong direction, James. In buzzer's original restoration thread, he said it was a 1998 model, which would have used the later oil level plate.

However, looking at the picture of the unrestored bike

I see it had the old-style fluted clutch cover, which would suggest it's a pre-1998 model. If that's the case then, unfortunately, you'd need the other plate, which is no longer available.

The resolution on that picture isn't sharp enough to see where the lines are on the original plate so I'd suggest you PM buzzer and ask if he can check his photos for a clear picture of the original item.

If it turns out that you need an earlier plate, Albie might be able to point you in the right direction.

All the paperwork says it is a 98 bike...I will ask Buzzer

I have email Ducati Coventry to cancel the part until I know for sure.

Looking closely at that photo’, the lines are clearly visible in the higher positions.

I managed to find a slightly clearer image on buzzer's YouTube channel and it looks as if it's the earlier plate...

I bought a complete clutch cover to replace the badge removed it then sold it on. I think I was a few quid down.
