Chain spat an O ring
After washing my M1200 yesterday I noticed an O ring on the drive. As far as I know the only way to fix this is to replace it with a new rivet link but Ducati want stupid money for a link, might be cheaper to replace whole chain. Does anyone have a quick fix for this?

Thanks Slob, but that's for ZVM chain, I have an HV3 chain but I think I've found one.

I’ve found B&C are very helpful in the phone when I’ve had tech questions in the past.
Any local bike shop should be able to put the link in if you don’t have a riveting tool. (although you probably know this already) |

I’ll also recommend those whale chain tools and PBR Motion Pro ones for doing that kind of work.
The PBR one allows non-destructive removal of individual links. Spend the extra and buy one of those two and stay from the cheap sets on eBay. |

If one o-ring has 'fallen out' then you have got to view all of them as suspect
(a) as they should all be the same through the chain links (b) if the link has been fitted properly them the compression of the failed ring should be the same as the rest of the chain. If it was a Regina chain then the rings at the link can be fitted the 'wrong way round' which will make them fail very early, if this is the case then the rest of the chains rings will be OK. DID use a common ring through the chain. Again the compression at the link is important for DID 525 HV3 the distance between the outer surfaces of the end plates should be 19.6 mm +/- 0.1mm, for Regina 525 ZRPK it's 22.7 mm +/- 0.15mm. This is from Ducati and it's in a release excitingly titled "Final Drive Chain Maintenance Precautions All Models and Model Years (Except XDiavel) Service Repair Bulletin SRV-SRB-18-030" Chains are a bit more tetchy than they used to be !!

good grief that's detailed! I've always used a fixed link to lock off a (vernier) caliper across the side plates and then compressed the rivet link to match, using the caliper as a go/no-go gauge before peening the pins over. I must have done hundreds, without issues, over the years. |

That’s what I do slob. I also measure the peened over rivet against another one for peace of mind. That’s how MC Garage show you how to do it.
None of mine have failed. Last edited by Ron1000; 04-09-2020 at 05:58 PM.. |

same here, Big lump hammer as an anvil and a smaller one to peen the rivet head. If there's spacers I do use them.
I just put the specs up as a thing of interest

Thanks for all your replies. I spoke to the DID importer who told me the HV3 chain is only used by Ducati (not true as Suzuki used it on one model) and that the link pin sizing was specific to that chain. Looking at the original O ring it looks to have been damaged on fit as its got crush damage in a spiral over 1/3 of it's circumference so I'm hoping it's a one off. I have managed to find a new link and will fit it when it arrives, I have all the correct tools and have fitted chains before.

That's some amazing detailed info in the tech bulletin. It sort of un-nerves me to think that back in the day a spring link was used on my Laverda chain
