June breakfast and Bunker tour.
Yes I know, a bit ahead of the game here!
I managed to confirm the timings today, for a visit to a Cold War Storage facility for the Blue Danube Atom Bombs. We will be having a guided tour by the owner, who has restored and preserved the site. The site is on an industrial estate at Barnham near Thetford. Date is Sunday June 14th, Meet at Brown's Café at the Mundford roundabout for breakfast at 9am. Arrive at the Barnham Site to start tour at 10.30am Tour lasts two and half to three hours. Option to convene for lunch at the Elveden Inn (5 minutes away) As far as I know the tour is free... Don't worry I will give this thread a prod nearer the time... ALL WELCOME. https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/barnham...DhlDML8LDNroK8

Just a bit of background info to whet your appetite; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Barnham
Keith Eldred, the owner of the quite rightly, scheduled monument, has told me that the tour is free, but donations for the upkeep are gratefully received. More info from his last mail; Directions from London direction :- 4 miles before Thetford on the A11 take the turning to Elveden. Cross back over the A11 go past the Elveden Inn and turn left at the crossroads. Go through village and take first turning to the right to Barnham. A mile and a quarter down the road turn left Gorse Industrial Estate. Go up the access road (300 yds) to the visitor car park where I will be waiting. If from Norwich direction go round the Thetford By Pass then there is a slip road about 1/2 mile from Thetford sign posted Honington. Go down this about a mile and take first left to Barnham - then as above From Bury St Edmunds travel on the A134 to traffic lights at Barnham turn left and Estate is three quarters of a mile on right then as above. Postcode IP24 2PH The tour can last up to 3hours and comprises short films and talks in the Visitor Centre – an hour’s tour of the site over rough grass – ending with a voluntary climb up a 30ft watchtower. Looking forward to your visit Cheers Keith

I think everyone realises that it's a forgone conclusion that we won't be able to attend this meet.
However I got a phone call from the wonderful Mr Keith Eldred (85) yesterday. In a touching old fashioned way he profusely apologised, but suggested that it was probably for the best to postpone our visit as a large part of the tour is watching several films in "briefing room" that could not accommodate 2M spacing. We had a lovely chat and he told me how the site is now restored to the condition when it was ready to receive Britain's first Atom bombs in the fifties. We reflected on how we worried they would drop the bomb in our younger days and how the whole World has been changed by a microbe... Funny ol' world innit? We're pencilled in for 2021. I'm very much looking forward to meeting the nice gentleman and seeing his historic site.
