Screen support
So far as I know, most Monsters have a small screen, despite being thought of as 'naked'. The screen on the S4R is pretty good and shields me without inducing much turbulence: I much prefer a clean airflow above my neck region as that's the quietest situation.
The only problem is that the S4R's screen is only attached down at the base, and the free edge vibrates quite a lot with both engine vibration and suspension movement. Using my imagination, I can just see the vibrating airflow coming at me! So I've just made a support system for the upper part of the screen, similar to one I made for another bike where it did make a big difference, including making the screen look much more secure. I work in brass a lot, and fabricate stuff using hard-solder, so the support is made from brass tube attached to a collar at the base (longer screw needed) and a small plate that locates on the well-nut that Ducati put there. Good idea Nick, well executed.
The other bad thing about the poorly supported screen is that the wind pushes it back into the instrument binnacle and takes the finish off the "softcoat" plastic casing, so when you decide to bin the fairing and properly go naked, you have a couple of unsightly bruises on your clocks.

Its surprising just how much loading a screen will get from the wind.
Mine is semi homemade, consisting of a cut down proprietary screen mounted to the top yoke on curved blades which I fashioned from 2mm thick aluminium alloy. The screen is shorter than the std ones fitted to early monsters so the leverage is less. Despite the ally blades being quite wide (maybe 30 to 40 mm) and looking like they were easily beefy enough for the job, after about 10yrs in service and much to my surprise, one of them snapped clean in half last year. If the std screens deflect that much in the wind I'm surprised that more of those don't fail. So I reckon you've done a good little mod there, Nick. Capo has a couple of similar struts on his S4R that we made between us, using carbon fibre tube and homemade ally end pieces. Last edited by slob; 29-03-2020 at 01:57 PM.. Reason: img link added |

You could at one time buy PoorDucRider struts, which I have a pair of somewhere, kicking about. They stopped the worst of the vibration but because they only supported the screen at top and bottom it would still get pushed back against the clocks. I improved this when I realised I was missing the rubber supports that clip into the cowl at the base.

Thanks for the interest. I didn't realise how much this would strike a chord with everyone: I just thought it was me being over-sensitive! I, too, considered taking brackets from the master cylinders but since I'd done a similar job before, connecting the bar clamps to the screen, went about it as you see. I'm not sure whether to make the stays less obvious with a coat of satin black paint. At the moment, the brass is actually silver-plated: all part of the clockmaker's arsenal of techniques!
Just for interest, perching centrally above the clock binnacle is my high-intensity red LED turn-signal warning light. I've fabricated a similar installation on many bikes now, in the interests of having a reminder in a noticeable colour that can always be seen within my forward view. A single LED needs some simple circuitry to work from both turn signals. I have to admit that the S4R, at least, has an OEM idiot light that is much more visible than many bikes, but I do like my little red winker! Nick |

I was going to ask what it was and I thought it was a battery charging warning light which would be sensible with these bikes. I'm looking into it myself actually.
