Early crimbo gift

Hi all

I've just bought my first ducati - an 06 monster 695 with only 700 miles on the clock, in red.

My first bike after passing my test was a hodna crb600f - fast and a very good bike but lacked character even with modded pipes. I sold that about a year ago and now my finances are in better shape, I've been looking for a winter bargain and didn't have any particular bike in mind.

Needless to say, after a good search by price bracket, I was surprised to see a young monster advertised at a great price. Picked the bike up today and I'm pretty chuffed so far. I've taken it easy and with the mileage at 700, is it ok to give it a full blat or should I wait until the mileage gets a bit higher?

So far the twin grumble does it for me. It's the character that I want.

I'm in Manchester and hopefully will get to meet a few of you kicking around when the weather is good.

p.s.
It didn't come with an owners manual or service book. Is the best bet to contact my local dealer?

Hello and welcom.
After just 700 miles it should of had a 1st service (600 miles). If you've not got a service book you might want to make sure that has been done. And with 700 miles only you'll still need to treat the engine gently until you're through about 1,000 miles.
Also given it's a couple of years old it it recomended that the belts get changed every two years regardless of mileage.
A Local dealer should be able to help you with all of that and hopefully you'll then be all set to enjoy it.
I used to own a 695 and there are plenty of owners in this club to offer advice if you need it.

good point about the belts and 2 year service. I'll get it booked into my local dealer for a service including belts etc.

I'm planning on using my bike to commute 6 days a week over winter. I'm not really going to have time to dry my bike when I get to work and when I get home (no garage, breathable cover on order).

I'm looking for a low cost / corrosion protector - any ideas? I've heard WD40 is good - give the bike a good blast before or after journey?

I know it's pretty difficult to defeat road salt during winter. I remember cleaning my alloys in the snow near Christmas. My mate Mark cleaned his car on Christmas day - I'm not that sad.

i was recommended ACF50 by many on this forum (do a search, there are other threads on this)

its a about £12 a can and you can spray it everywhere except brakes (and tires)

a little goes a long way, I used a paintbrush to spread it around and get it into the radiator and other nooks an crannies

its stays wet so road gunk will stick to your bike and make it look horrid, but when you come to clean it off in spring your bike should be pristine underneath

NB: it will smoke like crazy for about 15 mins after you fire the bike up as the fluid burns of the exhaust so be warned

no servicemanual or service book? what about spare keys and the important red one?

The addiction will now start, not long till you get the termi's on really get the bike singing!

Great buy though, you wont be disappointed, iv going to get mine serviced next week.

ACF-50 - that's the badger! I've just had a read through the review below and placed an order: http://www.acf-50.co.uk/motorcycle.htm and http://www.f2motorcycles.ltd.uk/

It sounds perfect. I think my bike will be a slimey mess over winter but then at least it should look good after a good clean at the start of summer.

Thanks for that. Even though the bike is for ever day use, I wouldn't be happy watching it corrode away.

As for no service book and handbook etc, I managed to get such a good price I couldn't say no. The seller agreed for my local garage to inspect the bike fully before completing the sale so their approval was enough for me to part with my cash (plus a HPI check etc).

I was aware that keys can be costly and fortunately the seller had the spare and red key. He did say he had the book so I assumed it would be there for me on collection, he just couldn't find it.

All I need to do know is find some well prices pipes for it although they do sound pretty awesome as standard. I think I would be addicted to the noise after fitting some cans.
