Ooooh, looks like it'll be piston rings then...
After swapping out all the o-rings and re-seating the heads I thought I had found the culprit for my issues but it wasn't so. The small dowel on the vertical cylinder hadn't been seated right in the past and put a small dent in the head so it only went about half way in and you couldn't actually seat the head right.
Fired it all up and still smoking like crazy. Tried using redex in the cylinder but it didn't seem to drain through at all. Fired it up, still crazy smokey. Did a compression test and the vertical cylinder is reading 122 cold, 120 hot and 150 if I put oil in. But horizontal one is reading 117 cold, 115 hot and with oil 130. I get the oil thing doesn't really work on the horizontal but I over filled it and turned it over to squirt the oil out of the spark plug hole and then did the test. So it looks like rings, with the vert jumping to 150 with oil, but wouldn't these readings also mean the horizontal one is also knackered if it was reading just as low even though it isn't having the same oil problems? Bite the bullet .......DON"T bother with just new rings you can get new pistons with rings for a similar if not cheaper than stock from someone like JE
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-90...wAAOSw8RJXB-ev and then get the barrels nicasil coated back to std spec, it will be like having a new bike, doing all the labour yourself the the job can be done for around £400/450

always a good shout and can be done for same price, but then you need to spend on jetting and dyno time so instantly you add at least another £250,

I think for now I'll just get some rings in to try and get the bike running. I've literally had it apart more times than I've actually rode it so far, so I just want it working to see what else might need throwing at it. My plan had been to use it this summer while it's a bit rough and ready, then put a bit of money into it next year and take it apart, tidy everything up and go over the mechanical side. Unfortunately I didn't even get as far as using it!! So next year I'll invest the time and effort into doing everything properly and plan to have it apart for a while. Right now it's like having a new toy that you just can't play with!! |

What have Langcourt charged you for the plating in the past? I will call them tomorrow but for info purposes if anyone else reads this it would be useful.

Fitment for 900SS and M900 will most likely be the same. Same engine, although I thought there were different pistons depending on oil feed being external or internal but I might be wrong.

Valve size could make a difference too (If there are pockets), but I’m only speculating?
