M2 riders beware!!!!

A mate of mine just got done for speeding on the M2 clocked at just over 90 mph..so, be warned.... I don't have any more details yet of where exactly....

I just found out it wasn't a static/hand held camera of any sort it was a traffic cop in a Volvo, he got caught just after the Bluebell Hill jct..

Yes; I am not condoning it...but an awful lot of drivers/riders sit at 90 on a m'way.... not me personally...

Very true and I do over and above my fair share of motorway driving/biking I can tell you and I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination

Premusably it was unmarked? I am aware of unmarked police Volvos in this area.

It was a marked Volvo...hard to miss really...except on a sports bike with those sill mirrors!!!

Gatso Speed Cameras
There are over 4,000 fixed Gatso speed cameras currently in use by police forces and local authorities across the UK, accounting for 90% of all fixed speed cameras. The Gatso which uses radar technology, is used for fixed speed cameras, in-car mobile units, on tripods and can even be used from moving vehicles.

Fixed Gatso speed cameras are rear facing. This is so the cameras 'flash' does not blind oncoming motorists. Unfortunately, this also means the cameras are not always viewable until the last second (as pictured above). The cost of installing a Gatso speed camera is approximately £20,000, but can cost as much as £40,000 if located in a rural location, as the system requires a 240v power supply.

The fixed Gatso camera has the ability to take up to 400 pictures. Cameras in that are located in busy areas or are particularly hidden, often only last a few hours before the film runs out, soon recouping the £20,000-£40,000 price tag.

Gatso speed cameras can also identify between cars/vans and HGVs separately. For example, if the speed limit was 60mph for cars/vans and 40mph for HGVs the camera will enforce the two separate limits.

It is common for fixed Gatsos to be positioned so they can be turned around to check both sides of the road - but only one direction at a time.

On the M25 in Berkshire and Surrey Gatso speed cameras have been placed in gantries across the width of the motorway with all four lanes covered simultaneously.

Points and Penalties

Being prosecuted in the UK by a Gatso speed camera can result in a minimum of 3 penalty points and a £60 fine. Fine amounts are currently under review by the government and may increase in near future.

NIP has to be served by 14 days. They will however ask you who was riding the bike, don't ignore this request if it arrives after the 14 days, if you do you will be prosecuted for failing to provide this information and then end up with points anyway.

If you are not notified of their intention to prosecute within 14 days (NIP) they can not prosecute. Send a nice letter back to them with details of rider and comment that they were too late with the NIP. Forces rely on people just going with it and accepting the penalty. If they fail to notify in time you can not be done.

Uesful info - I'm often going down the M2 to see a friend in' Planet Thanet' and sometimes make significant progress if I am late

He told me he accelerated from the slip road and didn't see the car.... the mirrors on his bike are so bad that you can't see anything..

For the record, I am a speed limit +10% +2 mph man.... I hate the thought of getting a ticket...

On the subject of tickets.... I got caught by a Gatzo coming through a tunnel near Isle of Dogs on my way back from the MCN motorbike show doing approx 39ish in a 30 (would have been slightly more but I saw the camera at the last minute and took emergency measures!) It did the double flash thing and i've been waiting ever since for the ticket - how long before I can breathe easy?
