Noise camera trials

Don't throw out those db-killers just yet!

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/n...isiest-streets

It wouldn't surprise me if the A272 was chosen as one of the four trial areas.

As far as I'm aware, that was just a two week trial of the prototype noise camera back in December 2019. Results of the trial are here if anyone's interested:

Yea read that one long ago. They spent close to 1m to confirm camera can pinpoint noisy vehicle when it's alone (as in far enough from another vehicle).

This can't work in high traffic always ride in Group of 1+n lol

Hmm .. at first I thought "that's a good way of putting it".
Then I realised that you can't ride in a group of any other kind.
ie you're the "1" and the rest of the group is the "n".

I'll get my coat.
It's the one labelled "pedant".

Then you can be that 1 and the NPR fails, the stats showed that was quite probable on a bike

Having read the report it would seem there are still quite a few holes in this 'proof of concept', as mentioned it can not identify a noisy vehicle in groups of vehicles nor can it distinguish traffic passing in 2 directions, nor passing traffic in the same direction (overtaking/dual carriageways). It doesn't work in rain/wet conditions, noise levels will change according to road speed limits, the list goes on. That would be most 'real world' driving situations in the UK.

Have they worked all these issues out now?

How can they apply the same noise limit for all types of vehicles? Trucks are loud, bikes louder than cars usually too by design. Type approved noise limits are set at a set speed but will not be the case at higher or lower speeds if they use those.
