Has my trellis rusted?

Hello everyone.

Just came back from a quick ride and when i parked the monster i saw all this messy yellow liquid on my motorcycle. It was dry and it looks like water mixed with rust.

I followed the signs of leak and it seems that it came from the small holes that are on the trellis.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Should i be worried?

Regards
Chris

I would say it needs more fibre in it's diet...

That's not what I would expect to see on a new bike, but the holes are obviously there for a reason...Looks like rust alright though.

If it were mine I would be trying to find all of the holes in the frame if there are any more. Then I would get in there with a water dispersant such as WD40 or just blast compressed air through to dry it out.
Finally I would try and work out how to blast some Waxoyl into all the tubes and then plug the holes.

As Gazza said, dry them out and find some way to plug the holes. Are you jetwashing?

Aren't those holes there for a reason?

No i am not jet washing. I washed the bike last Saturday but on those low degrees it hasn't dried...

I am a total newbie when it comes to motorcycles and i doubt that i can manage a repair like that.

Thanks for the answers. Chris

It's not a repair, it's just squirting.....All men can squirt...!!

A small square of red insulation tape might do the trick over the holes? If you can't find some sort of small plastic bung.

The simplest fix in your case might just be a really good squirt of WD40 right into the tube using the thin flexible tube that comes with the can.....Once a year should do the trick.

You might have to wipe gunge off for the first couple of rides after treatment, but then it's fixed.

I see what you mean.

At first i will try to spot the holes where the water finds its way in the trellis since at the moment i only found where the water comes from

Wet winter weather is not kind to exotic Italian bikes, been there done that. I'm sure those holes are there for a reason, maybe just to let any water out but I've not any on any of my Ducatis and surely they would be underneath at the lowest point and not on top if that were the case?

I have exactly the same thing on my Panigale. I assumed it had come from the chain - the face of the chain had surface rust after a wet ride. Having seen your photos I now wonder if it has some from somewhere else. No frame on the Panigale though...
Never seen this problem on the monster.
I'll have a closer look tomorrow.

Yep that's right Darren WD = water dispersant...It's the right thing for this job.

I heard that it's called WD40 because they had 40 goes at getting the formula right...Who knows?

Did you see "Trust me I'm a Doctor" the other week? They were talking about people who rub WD40 on their skin for various things like skin complaints and stiff joints...

I once worked with a chap who actually did that...He was one of the illest men I've ever seen still standing...An idiot if ever there was one.

As they said on the program...It's a water dispersant lubricant...Not a medicine!

No I didn't see that! But I agree its not a medicine but it might actually have some emollient properties, like parrafin maybe but I'm sure there are better options for that? Maybe if you're a replicant hanging of a building in the pouring rain it would be of some benefit?

So does that mean that ACF took 50 goes to get it right?

Yes...Okay on a skin job.

No idea how many times it took to get ACF50 right...I don't even know what ACF stands for, but I bet we could come up with something between us...
