Clip-on’d
Over the weekend I managed to get a couple of hours ‘me time’ in the garage, so spent it converting it my M900 to clip-ons using the Rizoma clamps I purchased from a member on here a year or so ago.
I like the riding position these give as they aren’t too extreme, only having a very slight down angle. What I’m not that happy about is that I’ve had to move everything outboard to its limit because I have ‘Coffin’ style master cylinders and they clash with the clamps. Saying that, the bars are less than 1.5in wider overall(<3/4in each side) so it’s not too bad. I imagine I’d be able to narrow the width again by converting to the later style master cylinders with separate reservoirs, which would also work better with the slight downward angle. Can somebody confirm if they are shorter or would fit better around the clamps shown below? Oh, and I had to adjust the lock stops a bit as the clamps were about 2mm off the tank on full lock both sides. I’ve set them to give @10mm. Thanks Nasher.

Here's mine with the goldline masters for comparison. I would say they look like they would fit better

Thanks Darren
How much of a gap is there between the bars and the MC round the back? From the images I've looked at on Ebay there appears to be far more space than with my Coffin style ones. Not really sure I want to do it yet, but if I do go with it are all years and model units interchangeable as long as I go with a brake MC from something with a twin disc front end Nasher.

I'm not going to stop you from upgrading your components, but these will fix your coffin clearance issues:

There's plenty of room. I couldn't measure the gap exactly but I can get a new pack of rizla papers in the gap. The clamp measures 32mm outside diameter and the bars are 22 so clamp must be about 5mm thick.
There are 2 types of the goldline masters as far as I know. Early 916 type (PSC15?) and 996 (PSC16?) type. Early is 15mm master and 996 is 16mm I think, there's not much difference but the levers are totally different. Mine are the early ones but it should have the later by rights being an '02 bike. Both should be fine with twin disks. Didn't the M900 have goldlines anyway originally?

I had thought about machining something similar myself. Unfortunately I realised I'd have to include a provision for the Choke lever locating screw as shown in my second image, but I'm sure it's possible. Now I know it's not just a product of my own mind I might revisit it. Nasher.

I have some MC and ASV levers for sale.
Might have some reservoirs kicking about to that I can throw in, if not they are cheap enough on ebay. Pretty sure it was me you bought the clip ons from, so if you want to complete the circle PM and ill let you know a price!

I have the Monster Parts adapters on the same clip ons and they work very well. I reasoned that even after shipping it worked out a fair bit cheaper than converting it all across to radial M/C's.
I considered Goldline, but no one had any at the time. |

Thanks again for the input guys.
I think I’d prefer to stick with the original ‘Coffin’ style MCs at the moment, mostly because of their cleaner look, and it’s not as if they don’t work well enough. The tops do need a re-spray or replacing after I skimmed them off in my Mill to get shot of all the nasty corroded paint in the original lettering. Jonzi, thanks for the offer, I’ll be in touch if I change my mind. I’m going to order up a pair of the adaptors suggested by Stopintime, and fabricate a small link bar to locate the Choke lever mechanism, which won’t take very long. Then when I have more time later in the year I’ll knock up a replacement adaptor that also includes a replica of the original location method for the Choke lever mechanism. Nasher

I did have a good look around their site to see if I could find anything else I needed, mostly to try and spread the cost of the postage as the $40 for the adaptors turned into $88 with the cheapest postage option. EDIT - Monsterparts have just refunded $15 of the $88 as they can send a smaller package. Can't ask for more than that. Nasher

Damint I would have split the postage as I fancy the swing arm spindle plates.

I'll be needing something other than the std steel ones to go with my new ally swingarm. I may produce my own design but I was also considering buying this type, but didn't know who made them. I'll let you know if I do decide to get them and we could maybe split postage ...? Sorry for hijack. |
