Shuttleworth Day Out.
On the 27/28th of December, the Shuttleworth Collection opens the doors of their workshops to the great unwashed for a look behind the scenes.
The Collections aim is keep every aircraft with the museum in air worthy condition. The aircraft within the collection are eclectic! From WW1 fighters to record breaking aircraft from the '30's, to iconic WW2 fighters. Gazza and I are popping along on the 27th, meeting in the on-site restaurant for 10am. If you have the opportunity to come along, do. It's a fascinating place. https://www.shuttleworth.org/events/openworkshop/

Great day out. Wondered around the museum with Gazza and Mike moc.
The lysander was in the Shuttleworth workshop for an overhaul. Fascinating looking over the WW2 technology.

Sounds like a good day out- I hope to get there at some point to have a look around.
Did you see the SE5a that my mates’ Dad, John Tetley built? I met John and his son Dave through classic racing, proper Yorkshire men the pair of them!! https://www.shuttleworth.org/news/se...-shuttleworth/

Well! Is it chemistry, Alchemy or just Magic?
Flip, we weren't especially looking for an SE5a, but I do remember seeing one. Quite a credit to anyone who can take on and finish a project like that. We did see a Bristol S2.b under restoration. I reckon my woodwork is up to the job. Surprised to see so much Oak used in a plane, the rest seemed to be Parana pine? Grumpy ensures that Mike is familiar with the maintenance intervals on a Spitfire... You have to change the belts on these Merlins every two years regardless of combat hours! A different view of the Spit's wing mounted 20mm cannon with magazine. The empty gun port would have had a machine gun The Gladiator's Browning fires between the barrels of her radial. Looking under the Lysander's passenger seat at the luggage compartment, from the position of the removed fuel tank. And finally.. Keeping the fire extinguisher nice and warm.. They are designed to be effective from 30ft, not to have your fingers burnt on them?? Health and Safety gone....

Flip, the SE5a was partly disassembled towards the back of the maintenance hanger.
Bearing in mind my interest in WW1 history, I'm amazed at the flimsy nature of the aircraft used in anger. As Gazza has mentioned, the build quality is to be admired.
