I adore her! But I may have broken her. Possible major engine problem??

After 3 years and 8 months of blissful riding, Mevo seems to have developed an issue that I don’t think is normal…

The only way to describe it is some kind of knocking/clunking sound coming from the engine – metal on metal that can be felt right through the bike.

Looking around on the web a few terms seem to come up that propose a similar sound…knocking, piston slap, etc, but I’m not convinced this is the issue…although I’m no expert to say the least.

It is intermittent, and only seems to appear during idle or deceleration at low revs. Pulling the clutch in has no effect on it at all.

The performance of the bike is still 100% as far as I’m aware… Still pulls like stink!!

I’ve booked the bike in to Woods for them to have a look/listen to it, and seeing as it’s due a major service in a few months I’ve asked them to do this at the same time too…

Any initial thoughts from the more learned members on this forum? Mevo has got a 1100 2v motor.

Not really much i can add

Flywheels work loose on M1100 evo just like they do on 796.

Mine made a horrible meta to metal noise for about 100 miles till i removed the cover
And spotted it.

No loss of power just intermittent noises depending in throttle.
Bought a new nut and locktite't the nut no problems for last 5000 miles
Flushed the oil and cleaned the strainer freq after fixing.

Bought a California Cycle Works alternator gasket as i got fed up of applying ducati sealer
Every time i take off the cover.

Regards
Rick

If it sounds bad, it probably is, something like a loose flywheel can end badly. I wouldn't run the engine again until you know what's causing it, could be the difference between a tightening of the nut and a major engine rebuild.

Get the dealer to collect it or use a breakdown service to get it there IMO.

Sound advice there.

Neil, I feel your pain.
Ultimately though, whatever the fault is, it can always be fixed.
It just down to the cost really, but in the end what's money compared to the love of a good monster ?

Incidentally, that calendar pic of your evo against the moody backdrop of the welsh hills........
Now framed and hanging on my wall.

Here's hoping for a positive outcome.

Flywheel working loose was a problem on many ducatis going back more than 15 years , S4r, S4, 998 all had the issue ,, same as clutch , ducati added new torque suggestions for nuts and also adding a drop of studlock

Thanks all for the advice guys. I'll definitely mention this to Woods when it's dropped off over the weekend.

@ utopia - I'm honoured!!
