HPI - Stolen. would you buy it?
Friends,
I need to buy a scooter (don't shoot me) I have seen one that is coming back as "Insurance write off - Theft" in 2005. Should I buy it or should i look at other scooters? What are the implications of buying it? It's been MOT'd for the whole time since 2005.

Depends on the category if you want to resell later.
If you just want a hack to drive into the ground and it is kosher and cheap then it's a good deal id cheap.

Ha ha welcome to the club. Make sure you buy a decent lock and chain. They have a habit of disappearing.
It should be a cat D if it was just a stolen recovered write off which usually means minor cosmetic damage that is uneconomical to repair. The pro is that they are cheaper, the cons, some insurance comps won't insure ex write offs but that is a rare. What is your budget. I figured buying a cheap scooter would inevitably mean I'd end up working on it and as I'd enjoy that as much as lancing some ones boils with my fingernails I went for new cos they are cheap as chips anyway. |

Budget is cheap as possible and with a top box.
I live in Berkhamsted. I could probably leave a pile of gold outside my house and it would still be here when I return. Not that I have a pile of gold, otherwise I wouldn't be looking for a cheap scooter.

Presumably you want to go somewhere on your scooter, then leave it somewhere whilst you go and do something? Or are you buying one for the pure joy of riding an underpowered boring pile of plastic within the leafy village of Berkhampsted?

This one has three wheels... so there's less chance of you falling off

If is a Cat D I would check the state of any repaired damage first. Otherwise there's no real difference in price. Tbh I understand you, if I had to regularly commute into Central London I doubt it'll be on a big v twin.
You should, however, consider GT option

Its a scooter which will get beaten up in no time flat commuting in London, yes there will always be those that will not buy it because of the history but equally plenty that will.
Providing it has the correct doc's what's the issue cheap city transport, gets to a point when it won't depreciate any further unless its totally scrap, go for it

That is exactly the reason I didn't get one and bought a nasty looking scooter instead

I run a Suzuki Burgman 400 scooter for nipping into town during busy times, I gave a grand for it eight years ago, handles ok up to 90MPH , gets a bit hairy if it,s windy above that speed, but I have had it showing a ton just to see if it would do it. I wouldn,t want to be without it now.

Got an NRG50 that was the GF's for work and spend a fiver all week on fuel compared to twenty five in the car, this will eventually be replaced by my 180 Runner when I get around to building it back up. Riding an auto in the city is so much less agro than a geared bike, you get extra protection and there's the handy boot / helmet bay.
